Hey all!!

Its upon us..

Looks like these are starting to arrive at dealers!!

I can't deal spot, but..Just wanted to let y'all know( if ya didn't already)

Mine shipped this morning, and I'm excited. I've only been waiting for years!

Hmm. I haven't received a notice yet. Is that just because it hasn't arrived at my dealer yet?

I fondled one today at a local sharp-thing emporium near Birmingham. The salesman had two new Spydies on his handwritten list to show me - the LionSteel collaboration, with it's big toe deployment hole, and a 'dodo', as he had listed it. That weird chicken hawk beak shaped knife blade with an orange handle is cute - but only because it is dog ugly. They'll sell a bunch of them! The big buck LionSteel knife, I am not so sure about. That's one big hole... and a thick blade. ElMax?? Good stuff. Interesting day at the store - I may have to check that 'dodo' price when I go back - if he's not out!

So, this is when I find out if KC has just been stringing me along or if I'm actually going to get one. Anyone gotten a shipping notice from KC yet?

PICS!

Just in case you don't know (Top: Cat, Native 5, Dragonfly2 G10, Dodo)

No liners. Not a deal breaker, but looks cheap without them.

One thing to note being a lefty. The screw holding the clip requires two torx drivers to remove it. I used a 9 and 8 from my precision set and it worked well.

Operation is smooth and the orange G10 POPS! I love the lock. The blade seems functional for most duties except for scraping. When I put it in rotation I'll use my Skeletool blade for that.

For me the Native 5 is still the perfect EDC, but this orange Dodo is awesome. I can see the appeal.

USA Earth! Awesome.

I preordered mine through a small shop in CA. Granted, I overpaid a little bit, but I'm getting one without the hassle of the larger stores and I got great service to boot. It shipped today, should be here no later than Wednesday.

Can someone please explain why the Dodo design seems so desirable? I'm kinda scratching my head on this one...

It's a cute little knife that carries very easily but fills your hand comfortably for hard cutting. Blade has belly for things like shaping the tip of a hot dog stick, and a hooked tip that's excellent for opening boxes, packages, pain-in-the-ass plastic packaging, etc. It's also a super people friendly design, very non-threatening although I think it would work pretty well in the same mode as a Perrin La Griffe.

The Dodo never had liners. It doesn't need them. Why add what's not needed? Isn't the structural integrity good?

I wasn't commenting so much on the need for the liners. You are right, it is very solid and doesn't need the liners. I was simply saying that liners make a knife more appealing (IMO) in looks and quality. Again not a deal breaker, but I like the look of steel peaking out. The G10 is thick and there is no flex. Awesome knife!

Several years of aftermarket prices in the neighborhood of $200-$300 with surges to $400 for a knife that retailed for around $90 and was closed out at $55 have created huge demand based on expected future value. Everyone wants in on something they think is going to double or triple in value just by being kept in the box and put to market after a few months. The demand is much more focused on collectors/buyers and their speculation on future value than it is on users wanting a very good, intelligently designed little-big knife. Which is pretty common for most sprint runs, it's just the Dodo has a very public and valuable history that a large number of users know about.

During the original production run it was not very popular, at the time a lot of people derided it for being what was billed as a glorified box cutter with an outrageous price tag. It's also difficult to sharpen properly and carries like a knife with a longer blade. These things make me very interested to see where the aftermarket price for the orange Dodo ends up. I suspect the vast majority of purchases with be stowed away in collections unused or used sparingly once it's recognized that the thing will eventually need to be sharpened.

Of course, I'm just bitter because I didn't get one. :foot: :D

The appeal for me is a goofy looking knife with orange scales. It is currently my EDC. No storing and waiting to resell. Other perks include USA Earth, funky lock, decent steel, and a spydie hole.

I also agree with Burke.
