I saw this on the big auction site and just had to share. It really makes me smile.:D This has to be the most oversharpened blade ever. What was once a fine stockman has been turned into a sad anorexic muskrat. I admire frugality, but pocketknives are not that expensive. ;) As a salty salute to this old dog, post your veteran blades that have seen a long time at the grinding wheel.

I've got an old Western that would be in good comapany with that one, let me see if I have pics available now. If not I will post later...

Found a pic with it and another that could be a candidate!

Top is a Robert Klaas in ebony that was "loved to death", middle is Gottleib Hammesfarh (good condition, just was purchased at the same time as the others) an the bottom is the Western in jigged bone.

Now that's a well used knife!

I picked up this George Wostenholm at a flea market a few years ago. The blades aren't quite as worn as Corey's anorexic muskrat (love that description :)) but they are well worn. I am not familiar with this pattern and I really don't know what the blades looked like when the knife was new. I'm guessing the master blade has more wear than the secondary blade.

I have half a mind to just pick one of my knives at random, and compulsively sharpen the dickens out of the thing until it looks like the knife in the OP. I think that looks so cool.:D None of my knives are missing any noticeable amount of steel. I have too many for any one to get sharpened that much.

I found this for sale a while back on the auction site and saved the picture. I actually really like it; wish it were mine. More like a quill knife than any kind of trapper now.

That old Case kills me Steve. Somebody actually leaned hard into the grinder on the handle! A poor man's easy-open jack? :)

I posted this pic in the "Old knives" thread...noy my knives, but I guess they deserve some place in this thread too. Also, they remind me of my dad's stories about his grandfather's knife.

Maybe this thread out to be retitled "Why NOT to use a grinding wheel".

Although I did seriously wear down the main blade on a Buck 303 Stockman many years ago with just stones.

I like new safe queen knives, but there is something about a well worn pocket knife that you've carried for years or decades that gives the knife character.
Like that comfortable Old pick up truck or Old pair of worn out work boots, you know there history, you have made your fingerprint them, making them part of your Tradition and your Life.

Great thread idea. I have reluctantly passed on a few that otherwise had some redeeming qualities. Some I just cant pass up.

wow that stockman looks funny
must have seen a lot of use, awesome! and still going strong!

This is not as old as the other knives posted, but it was carried by me for 20+ years. The scales are now worn down (very slick) and the blade has turned into a wharncliffe. Definitely pocket worn. :)

When you think about it, look how carefully you would have to use that knife, in order to not snap off a blade! I think it speaks to skill as well as wear!
I'm impressed!

Great thread idea! I had been meaning to start a thread like this but never got around to it. These are some cool photos. I love to see seriously used up old knives. I'm weird I guess...

Awesome idea....

Somewhere I have an old timer that I bought off the Bay because I thought it deserved a good retirement. :) So busted and worn it was barely a knife anymore. That's gotta be worth some knife nut cred. LOL

Those "knife sharpeners" that were built into the old electric can openers ate many a knife.
