You live through one hurricane that turns off the power for a couple weeks and you become suddenly very interested in manually operated can openers. Those US military issue can openers have only one thing going for them; size. Other than size they are thumbbusters, leave jagged edges and seem to dull after a few cans. They remind me of the Soviet era ammo can openers that came inside of the wooden cases of sealed cans. These Soviet can openers got the job done but damn they were deficient. The second ammo can that I opened I wrapped the handle in duct tape. The third soviet ammo can that I opened I used a power grinder to grind open the can in a lot less time and effort.
The old P38 can openers bring back memories but mine are scattered in junk drawers in the house. Instead, I am "heavily invested" in kitchen aide two handle openers. I must have four or five around that I consider essential parts of our hurricane preparations.
