The Pajarito Trail and a Chopweiler

I love the open look of the canyon. No underbrush. Thanks for the pictures. It looks so much cooler and nicer than the thick cover down here.

There's a lot of variety that's for sure. If I get tired of hiking one area I just move on to another. During hunting season I'm way up in the fir and spruce.

Great pics but Bill, don't you have a 2 lb base packweight? interesting to see you hiking with a knife that must weigh close to that!
Looks like a good blade.

You're correct that my recent conversion to Busse Blades is a little out of character. But we're all young enough to learn new tricks, right. :D When I go on a trek that takes me close to my limits I travel as light as possible. (Did 3 days in the Grand Canyon with a 20 lb pack.) But when I take a shorter workout hike I use the opportunity to play with alternate gear and explore different approaches to woodsmanship. The process is thoroughly enjoyable.

P.S.

Ironically, on the day I took the hike described in this thread, my GC hiking partner was running a trail on North Mesa (the location of my home), and encountered a large male cougar coming his direction on the trail. Joe stopped and picked up a large branch as the cougar kept coming. Finally, at a distance of about 35', the cougar broke from the trail and disappeared into the brush.

Later that day Joe went to Santa Fe to buy a compact 380 that he could carry in his pocket while running. He also enrolled in our local concealed carry course. He had encountered the same cat before, but never had he gotten so close.
