the penknife

I kind of grip mine loosely about kind of 1/3 way down the handle. I hold it tightly with my thumb and forefinger and then just kind of loosely wrap my hand around the rest of the handle, When I chop I kind of swing, using the tightly gripped part as the pivot and that allows me to get maximum use of the weight in the end of the blade compared to gripping the whole thing tightly with my hand.

Don't worry, Cog. When you're ready for one it'll find you. They always do...unless some greedy shark SOB snatches it up from under your nose:D

Doh. After this thread, I wound up ordering a pen knife (and some more) today.

It'll get here when it gets here. :)

Ah, the pass-around Pen. Brings back some memories.

I prefer a three-finger grip for chopping - puts the sharp butt in a more comfortable place, and gives a bit more leverage. I'd be careful about spectators, though. Also, the forward bulge makes it a bit easier to control where the blade hits - my aim with an AK tends to hit over a wider area of the edge.

With a Pen knife, and a Pan knife, you've got everything you need for a fine widerness cutlery experience.
