The perfect custom Bowie - 12 inches - a Graill quest

I would bet that very few people, custom makers included have any idea how their forged knives compare to INFI, in durability and edge holding.

With that said, i have no experience with it either.. :). But dont discount the ideas you started with. No one has proved custom = better. Quite the contrary, in some respects.

I have plenty of Busse blades, and a few customs. I can say that customs are better in that they have SOUL, as remarked above. The idea that a single person crafted the knife has great appeal, especially (to me) when done by forging. But if I really need to split a cinder block, I would grab a Busse, not my Foster.

Well said my friend

I am a huge fan of Bagwell

I am also a huge fan of others mentioned here.

Jason Knight is one of the very best in the game and IMHO if you choose to go with a piece from him you can't go wrong

Here is my Knight

Very sweet Knight blade! Congrats!

While not a Bowie in the strictest sense of the word, I would go with the Busse NMFBM LE
No coating, a little thicker, and not irreplaceable like many of these posted here. It will take a real beating. However, PJ Tomes makes a great Scagel style piece - and if I were looking, I would consider this one -

Just my $.02

Ahhh...I remember that blade as it came out of the shop...if I wasn't so poor it would never have made it to BLADE that year. I still adore that knife, reminds me of the rebel flag. Congrats!

Thanks Haley it is a dandy

Actually Jason just got done rehandleing it and it should be on my doorstep when I get home

The lovely Blackwood handle cracked and had to be replaced . Should look about the same just a tad bit more palm swell that I requested

Hi,

A number of years ago I too was looking for my "grail" knife. I saw it (many differnet times, many different models and makers), but the thing about "grail" knives is they are quite expensive. So, I started making knives. What a fun trip it's been. Still haven't made that perfect grail knife, but what would I do if I did?

So, you could always start making knives. There's lot's of litature on the subject. and of course, the guys on this site are without doubt the most helpful folks you'll ever meet. But, with all of that said, every of of the makers mentioned are very, very good.

Thanks for the input Dave, that's the plan after I get a great Bowie. Will probably just do it at the hobbyist level, but would love to make myself a few quality blades... that's probably a long way down the road ;)!

Edit : Did you start cutting from stock and heat treating or did you go the whole way and started learning to forge when you started?

I primarily did stock removal for a year or so, but when I moved to the country I made a forge and since then haven't looked back. There's a lot to learn, using the various steels, heat treating, leatherworking, woodworking, silversmithing, you can challenge yourself as much as you wish. It's all good, clean (not literally) fun.:)

before I started, I too bought custom knives, and still do on occassion. But making them, that's something else indeed! When you get going feel free to send me a message anytime, be happy to help.

Thanks Dave much appreciated for the kind words of encouragement! Will surely do when I start :)! For now just did some woodworking and some inlays from Desert Iroonwood for a balisong kit, but I'll sure need some advice when I start doing it for real :)!

thanks!

Just took the plunge and ordered the Fantasmagoria from Jason Knight :
