The Perfect EDC folder... what do you think?

What do you think of the Sog Aegis? Light weight 3.1 oz, beautiful flat ground 3.5" blade, $75... perfect EDC folder?

I am thinking of purchasing the Aegis in digi camo and TiNi plain blade for general EDC... mostly light to medium use. I watched several of the youtube reviews which were very positive but there was some mention regarding blade play.

Unfortunately I will not be able to handle the knife before purchasing it online... so I have two questions.

1) I am a little worried about the few remarks regarding vertical play and or side to side play. I hate blade play and like a tight lockup. If you have handled or own the Aegis... how is the lockup?

2) I also don't know much about the Arc Actuated Piston Lock. Is it as strong and as reliable as say a Spyderco mid lock or even a liner lock?

Any input about the Sog Aegis would be most welcomed... as well as any other similar knife suggestions with 3-3.5" blade and under 3.9 oz. (I have bm grips, Leeks and Delicas already) :)

Thanks all!

I think $75 for any AUS-8 blade is high. It's a cool looking design, but I remember getting excellent cutting perfomance out of under $30 AUS-8 Beretta airweights.
For a third less you can get a Kershaw Packrat with 14C28 steel, nice profile and edge geometry, G10 and clip that works in the pocket, as well as the accompanying SpeedSafe opening.

I've owned several Shallots and Packrats, and you can't find better lockups for the price. They slice and slice, feel good in the hand, and can be found for much less than $75. Just my opinion.

I humbly suggest the lone wolf harsey t1 with g10 scales.

i have the Aegis and love it. Edge retention is an issue but having a sharpmaker makes it easy. one of my favorite folders. I also agree with the Harsey recommendation though

I'm pretty much sold on the T1 Harsey now after reading a bit about it.

You're right though. I'm having a hell of a time finding it...with a plain edge that is.

ajdddyoung... how is the lockup of your Aegis? any blade play vertically or side to side? Is the edge retention that bad for Sog's aus8? Any thing else you can tell me that you like or dislike about the Aegis?

diamdave... thanks for the suggestions on the shallot and packrat, they look great for the money but I'm trying to stay under 3.9ozs. and really I would like to be closer to 3ozs. for my EDC purposes.

p_mcmanis... thanks for pointing out the Harsey T1. It fits my parameters and I like the 2.9oz. weight, S30V and g10 scales, but like you said hard to find in plain edge g10.

Please keep the suggestions coming for comparable knives and I would still like to hear any comments you have regarding the Sog Aegis and its lockup.

Thanks :)

I like the aegis, but its just to pointy for my EDC Use, unless it was self defence EDC.

Id rather spend a little time looking and get exactly what I want, even if I have to wait a few days / weeks for a NIB one to pop up on ebay. I dont know if its discontinued or if lone wolf just doesnt make a ton of folders.

I agree p_mcmanis, but I went to Lone Wolf's website and it looks as if the T2 has been discontinued and they only have the T1 in combo edge here http://www.lonewolfknives.com/store/pages/products-harsey-lc17405.shtml And of course I would need a plain edge... figures. :)

Any other knife suggestions?

oops... I was looking at the picture of the T1 from the link above and it shows a combo edge but now i see in the detail it says plain edge. However I checked all of my fav sites for knife purchasing and none of them have the T1 in g10 plain edge. So please keep the suggestions coming.

havent tried the aegis, but i love the flash 2, which is similar.

the alunimun handle flash 2 is an awesome knife.

I have an Aegis and its a nice design, very sharp, lightweight, etc. However it does have blade play and I'm not a big fan of the locks on the SOGs. It is rather pricey, so for that kind of $ check out the benchmade 580 instead. I have videos on youtube about both under my name.

The only SOG I've had is a mini x-ray. Great little knife, easy to flip open or closed. It's a good size, I carry behind the hip and I didn't even notice it was there when I got jumped flat on my back by a lady friend... :D only later did I notice it clipped to my pants on the floor.

Thanks creativeoutlethobbie... nice youtube reviews. Why don't you like the Sog locks? Does your Aegis have vertical blade play or side to side and how bad is it?

Funny you bring up the 580, because I just bought a 585 Mini Barrage since I thought the 580 would be too heavy... had it for one day and the spring assisted opening broke. The blade won't stay closed now and I have to push it kinda hard to get it to close.

I was starting to warm up to it although the handle felt a bit short like I wanted to keep choking up on the knife, but I liked the weight at 3.4oz and it had solid lockup. It did feel a little slippery especially where you place your thumb when cutting... has no jimping and is slick.

Anyway I'm sending it back until they get the kinks out and make some improvements like jimping and maybe g10 scales instead of the valox. :)

Hence my search for a new EDC knife under 3.9oz with 3-3.5" blade.

3mptin3ss... nice pic of the Flash 2. I have the Flash 1, very light and small.

how about a kershaw skyline or a kershaw od1 ?

kershaw od1 is one of the best knives i have gotten in a while, and the skyline is another winner.

My perfect EDC folder is a Benchmade 940. Have you considered it?

No blade play at all on my Aegis. I really like the knife except edge retention. A griptillian is another fine edc in that price range.

3mptin3ss... I agree on the Skyline nice light thin package for EDC at 2.3 oz, I already picked one up at Walmart last month and I'm real happy with it. I had the OD1 also, but traded out of it. I didn't care for the way Kershaw did the flipper on it.

Sufler... nice choice on the 940, actually it was one of my very first real nice higher end production folders when they first came out in 154CM. In fact I met Osborne in person at a knife show back then where he discussed the 940. Buttery smooth action and great lockup with the axis lock. It's still in my EDC rotation.

ajdddyoung... nice to hear your Aegis has no blade play, your the first person that has said that. Are you saying edge retention is an issue with the Aegis Aus-8 or all Aus-8 knives in general? How often do you have to touch it up vs. your usage?

Please keep the suggestions coming guys! See why I need your help finding a new EDC. :)

starchaser it sounds like you have a ton of edc knives lol.

well I would also suggest the h&k snoddy, although its not exactly pretty, failing that maybe its time to save up some cash and buy a small sebenza or strider pt

So, I found a lot of pics, vids and reviews on the Sog Aegis, and I would not consider it the ideal EDC folder... I can;t find where it is made, so I'm guessing Taiwan at best, and Aus8... also I do not particularly like the looks of it...especially the camo...just not for me. There really IS no "perfect" EDC. I'd say that the CRK Sebenza is the only knife that comes close. On a less expensive side, there is the BM Griptilian series, but I'm liking my Persidio Ultra more (blade and handle shape). The knife that I've come across that REALLY shines in all tasks is the Spyderco Paramilitary. IMO, it drops the ball on looks, but somehow makes it a moot point once carrying it for a few weeks. I would consider the Military THE ideal EDC, but loses points due to ridiculous blade length laws.

Because "Tactical" use has ZERO factor in my uses, it is of ZERO consideration. My criteria is this:

Nice looking
Finest materials
Well made
Attention to Detail
Fit and Finish
Not too bulky
Made in USA

My criteria goes beyond being a useful tool. I carry pride in my pocket. While I have yet to see perfection nailed down into one package, I have found many knives that come very close.

The ideal EDC just may be a Leatherman TTi Charge (though maybe a little bulky) but it probably won't knock the Paramilitary out of my manpurse, or the Mnandi out of my pocket.
