The Perfect EDC folder... what do you think?

sog knives are good have you ever looked at case knives i carry one every day and it holds a edge well and you get a lot of choices for handles and blades

I love SOG's multitools, and their fixblade offerings are quite nice. I don't know though about their folders, I have handled a few of them and just can't get off the fence to buy one...I just think they feel kinda cheap. I mean I guess I expected something a little beefier after using their multi's and fixed blades. I really wanted a Trident folder but after holding it, passed and decided on a para military. I have seen some of their high dollar offerings, which do look nice and heavy, but for that price point I could get a custom knife made. Just my 2 cents, Good Luck with your search.

p_mcmanis is correct in that the Sog Aegis in made in the US and you are also correct in that I have quite a few of the most popular EDC knives which is why it gets harder to choose new ones. ;) I do have a small regular Sebenza that I have only carried a few times which has been discontinued now. Although I am intending on selling it to finance other knife buys. :D

cb4life_30... I kinda feel like you in that i've been on the fence going for the Sog Aegis and still am since you all have given me so many good suggestions.

Archiebald & cb4life_30... funny you bring up the Spyderco Paramilitary because that is a knife I have been contemplating for quite a while and have just never pulled the trigger on for some reason. Although it seems to be always lurking in the back of my mind when I think about buying another knife. Just always hard to decide without being able to handle a knife before buying and I'm not sure how I would like the compression lock and trying to close it one handed. Can you please tell me if you would recommend it in S30V or D2 and why?? BTW, I like your criteria Archibald.

It seems not many Sog Aegis fans around. :)

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and suggestions so far... it really helps to get others points of view on EDC knives. It's already given me some new ideas to look into... so please keep them coming as I will probably be making a final decision soon.

Thanks all

For an EDC, I always try to handle the knife before I buy. As for the compression lock, it is awesome, no blade play and very easy to close one handed. It keeps your fingers out of the way. It is also easy to manipulate with work gloves on as well. Did I mention this the knife by which all my other knife purchases are measured

starchaser,

I have carried a Sog Aegis to work everyday for the past couple of months.
I really like the knife. Why? It's assisted opening is convenient and the lock release is in the right spot for closing with one hand as well. It holds an edge not too bad in my opinion. I do have a Spyderco Tri-Angle set up on my table and touch it up each time I come home from work.
I am not sure exactly what you would like to use yours for but being assisted opening there is a certain amount of side to side and vertical play with the Aegis. It doesn't feel mushy though. The one thing though I have noticed with the three Sog's I own that have the same locking mechanism as the Aegis is that you can actually on all of them apply pressure with your hand on the spine of the blade and it will release the lock. This does take quite a bit of pressure though but it is possible.
The blade is an excellent slicer and the black coating is holding up amazingly well. I have the all black version. It was a super price so I couldn't pass it up.
I have the luxury of playing with all the knives I'm interested in before buying.
If you can get a really good price on one and can forgive the little bit of play you just might be happy with the Sog Aegis. I am relatively new here and don't have a lot of experience or knowledge with respect to the technical side of things but the Aegis was a good buy and I have not been disappointed in it at all.

In my experience all sog folders have an unacceptable amount of blade play.

Have you looked into the Benchmade Mini Dejavoo?

Blade Length: 3.23"
Blade Thickness: 0.114"
Blade Material: S30V Premium Steel
Blade Hardness: 58-60HRC
Blade Style: High Ground Utility; Ambidextrous
Weight: 3.50oz.
Clip: Tip Down, Removable
Lock Mechanism: Modified Locking-Liner
Overall Length: 7.69"
Closed Length: 4.42"

My EDC is the full sized

You could get any knife recommended here and be satisfied with it... just look at what you normally use a knife for, pick one that looks good for you, and take the plunge!

The Sog Aegis is out! Mainly because of what Seanski said in his post about the lock releasing with pressure on the spine of the knife (not the first time I've heard that)... that's what I was afraid of and I also know I won't be happy with a lot of blade play. So thanks guys for the comments on the Aegis.

The good news is with the Aegis out of my mind now haha... it leaves me open to look into all the good input you guys have given me so far for a new EDC.

I appreciate everyone posting so far, please keep the suggestions coming. With the Aegis out of the way, it's kinda like starting all over again lol.

It's fun to hear everyone's ideas and opinions for a relatively light weight (under 3.9oz) 3-3.5" blade EDC.

Thanks all!

What do you think of the Sog Aegis? Light weight 3.1 oz, beautiful flat ground 3.5" blade, $75... perfect EDC folder?

I am thinking of purchasing the Aegis in digi camo and TiNi plain blade for general EDC... mostly light to medium use. I watched several of the youtube reviews which were very positive but there was some mention regarding blade play.

Unfortunately I will not be able to handle the knife before purchasing it online... so I have two questions.

1) I am a little worried about the few remarks regarding vertical play and or side to side play. I hate blade play and like a tight lockup. If you have handled or own the Aegis... how is the lockup?

2) I also don't know much about the Arc Actuated Piston Lock. Is it as strong and as reliable as say a Spyderco mid lock or even a liner lock?

Any input about the Sog Aegis would be most welcomed... as well as any other similar knife suggestions with 3-3.5" blade and under 3.9 oz. (I have bm grips, Leeks and Delicas already) :)

Thanks all!

after reading the thread about Sog's i don't think i'd ever buy a sog folder. seems like there's too many production problems and just as many customer service problems. i'd hate to buy myself into a problem

I just got a Bradley Alias II and I'm loving it. Perfect size for EDC and made in the USA. It's light, but very solid. Not cheap, but I think I'll get years of excellent use.

I decided to go with the Benchmade Mini-Nitrous Stryker.

You all gave me so many good ideas it was a tough choice. So I took my parameters (light weight EDC with 3-3.5" blade) and I applied archiblue's criteria below:

Nice looking = BM907D2 Mini-Nitrous Stryker
Finest materials = D2 Tool Steel, G10 Scales over Dual Titanium Liners
Well made = Benchmade Black Class
Fit and Finish = Benchmade Black Class
Not too bulky = Handle Thickness: 0.450", Blade Length: 3.00", Closed Length: 4.25", Weight: 2.80 oz.
Made in USA = Benchmade

I do see a Para Military lurking in my future though. :D

Thanks for all the great suggestions all!
