The perfect Emerson?

I bought one of the Benchmade/Emerson CQC7's WAY back in the 90's and carried it for years. It was eventually retired, but recently, I ordered another CQC7 (now from Emerson) with the wave feature (AWESOME) and am back on board the train.

I live in mostly an urban area and think the 7 is PERFECT for my EDC around town... I like to hunt, fish, and camp though so now I want one with a little more "outdoorsy" potential for when I hit the woods. I'm looking at the CQC-8, Commander, CQC-13, the CQC-15 and CQC-16 (VERY unsure about the 16)... I can't decide! Of course durability/dependability is important, as well as self defense capability, but I'd like something better than my 7 for field dressing a deer, gutting fish and making fuzz sticks... I have a feeling all of the above will eventually join my collection but I can only afford one for now! What do you guys think?

Well, the 16 was designed as a hunter's knife so that should be at the top of your list. Why are you unsure about it?

Personally I would put the 16 first and then the 8 and the 10 as the most utilitarian designs.

I don't like the upswept spine on the 16! The 13 doesn't seem to be too different than the 16 except for the 'hump' on the back. Everybody raves about the commanders though, and as I understand it they were originally designed as a SERE knife...

i have found the 8 to be the most utilitarian blade.

the commander has a recurve, which i dont care for.

I think my favorite Emerson is my 7A w/ Dragons Teeth. Don't tell my Mini Comanders though.

I have totally changed my mind about the recurve. For utility... Commander.

CQC13 is a larger blade. Obviously, the bowie style blade excels at SD as well as the bushcraft. You made a great observation about the 13 and 16. The blade side of these two blades share many similarities. The handle design and blade length would be the decisive factors in my considerations.

Lycosa-ok what's happening? First, it's the black handled CQC7 (instead of RED). Now this? Gentleman we need an intervention.

I'll will agree with you brother, the commander as an all around go to SERE knife is hard to beat. The 15 and 11 are great knifes too. The CQC8, well just ask Haze- they broke the mold. When I read the testimonials, CQC7 (being the oldest) is the most mentioned. The commander is #2.

Aside from this, you seem to be either in the 13 or commander camp. Truly, any of these knives will perform for you. I'm with Lycosa, Commander is you #1. Now all you have to choose is the size (mini, standard, super, or UBR). Best wishes.

I have 5 7's... that's wut!! :)
Get a Mini or a Commander and Krein it!! You'll thank my azz.

8 and 10, in stonewashed finish. 10 is the most straightforward utilitarian model, but I like the long cutting edge of the 8. Either will work great for you.
