The Perfect Necker - Found It !

When it comes to neck knives some people love them and some hate them. I'm a big fan of them especially in summer when I don't always have shorts/pants with belt loops preventing me from wearing a belt knife.
I also like to carry a necker as a back up to my main blade.

My problem has always been finding the perfect neck knife, too large and it becomes annoying to have hanging from your neck, too small it becomes a waste of time having it with you, might as well have a folder.
What I tended to find was that to have a neck knife light enough you had to forgo the scales, my Swampwarden and the ESEE Izula are good examples, however with no scales and maybe just a Paracord wrap they are not the most comfortable for prolonged use.

Just when I thought all was lost a little Mora caught my eye in a local store, maybe that would work I thought !

Well I've tried it out for a few days now and this thing rocks, super light, comfortable handle, carves like a laser............I really can't think of anything negative to say about this knife.

The humble Mora 511....

I epoxied some plastic tube into the sheath so that it could hold a ferro-rod.

It was raining heavily again today but it took no time at all to shave up some fatwood with the Mora.

Thin enough to ignite easily with the Ferro-rod.

I also cut up a bunch of veggies this morning for dinner and the little knife once again performed awesomely, I guess you can tell I'm pretty impresssed with this little guy eh !

Anyway here are a few more pics from today and yesterday.

It's so wet right now it's unreal, this was run off water in the forest today.

There were still some Hawthorn berries to be found.

Not that I needed to eat those, I'd picked up a breakfast sandwich on my way, this made me quite popular with the dogs !:D

The 511 is a great knife, and if you look for the Xray images of Moras...the 510/511 almost has a full tang, so it's plenty strong too! I also like the shorter bladed Moras for neck carry :D awesome pix as usual Pit, thank you sir :)

Nice knife Pit have you ever tried the Mora #2 for neck knife? I love to carry mine that way very light

Great knife review! Glad you take your knife outdoors and use it! Great pics as well!

I thought this was going to be another one of those reviews of a pristine knife made out of the latest macho steel with a few baton marks on it!

I forgot to mention that I did have to do some work on the spine to get it to throw sparks with the ferro-rod, only took a few minutes. In factory condition they won't throw any sparks at all from the spine.

That is more or less the idea behind the Moras that I have been getting lately. I have about five of those red boogers from a few years ago. I had them all drilled with para going through the base of the grip, so the knife lays flat. I have two in the car trunk I believe and one is currently pickling in malt vinager as an experiment. Even the warden will neck carry a Mora because they are so light. She gets a bit freaked when the Coyotes yip and yabber close by. Good reminder to K.I.S.S.

Is this your first mora? I had a custom scandi in 1/8" steel that I bought first and it just didn't cut well. It turned me off of scandis for the longest time. A while back I was ordering something else and threw the companion mg on the order just to try it out. It's now one of my favorites and has been my kitchen knife for about 6 months.

Where's the snow? :p

We've had snow/sleet this week but it's been the really wet stuff. I did see snow on the surrounding hills this morning, was gonna head to them for a hike but decided at the last minute to stay closer to home.

Guess Cody knew what he was doing when he started carrying his Mora around the neck. I ought to give that a try - never really looked at any other Moras than the Companion series.

Thanks!

I wish I had a store I could walk into and find Moras at. lol

I have used a Mora as a necker before, but I found it kind of big. Not too heavy, just a little on the larger side.

I have a 511 and a High Q all around and can't decide which one I like best. I started carrying mine around my neck with a piece of para cord about a year ago. I of course got the idea from watching Cody Lundin on t.v. . It works great and the knives easily do all that I need them to. It is a little disturbing to me that after all the money I have spent on knives, and it has been a lot, a Mora and a sak really are all I need. And if I am honest work the best.

I hear you. I'm searching for a replacement for my mora just because I'm a knife knut and I want something nicer. Not because it needs replacing. :D

I like carrying my knife baldric style with a knot you use to tighten the cord with. I carry it baldric until I'm at camp and then slide the cord off my shoulder, cinch it up, and then wear it on my belt. Keeps it from flopping around while tending a fire.

I like my Mora but for neck carry I like...

The Becker is great and about as large as I want on my neck. The CKC is a fine neck knife. I found I like the TOP's more then I thought I would. I did have to thin the edge a bit.
