The perfect slipjoint?

Some of the very best are mentioned already!

If you want a well made and affordable slippie for daily use just get you a Bob Ham knife. I`ve 3 of his slippies and they are great users!  :D

There are so many fine slippie makers that I am hard pressed to pick just one. In fact I can't do that.

Tony Bose, Bill Ruple, Don Morrow, and Ray Cover Sr. are all favorites of mine. My favorite slip joint is my Ray Kirk Scagel Repro in 52100 though. That hand forged blade and back spring are hard not to love and the overall feel of that classic design just sits well with me.

I prefer big 3 blade stockman patterns, like the current large Queen, but have been finding it hard to locate makers that will make this pattern...Recommendations would be nice, but Bose timeline doesn't work for me, and Chamblin, Shadley and Rogers all make them too small and delicate for my taste.

I agree with STeven. I have recently acquired a really handsome Ruple stockman but at just over 3.5" closed I find myself wishing it was just a bit larger. (Though it does make it eminently pocketable.)

I haven't been collecting custom slipjoints long at all but have been fortunate enough to add wonderful knives by Tony Bose, Joel Chamblin, Bill Ruple, Ray Cover, Sr. and J.B. Moore.

The differences between them all are a matter of degree but if I had to judge, there's just something elemental/primal about that Bose knife (it's nigh on perfect) with the Chamblin coming in a close second.

As my good friend Gus K. has mentioned to me on several occasions, the level of talent amongst the very top makers is so close that it really comes down to a knife by knife comparison. (A wise fella my friend Gus.)

I should just bit the bullet and get on the Bose wagon....you fellas over at Traditional:D have said that he doesn't take orders anymore(did I imagine that?), so maybe I'll have to dig deep for dealers.:grumpy:

I already have a Ruple wharnie trapper, 4 3/8" in stag, and it rocks the house! I have a large Copperhead on order with him as well. While the knives themselves don't get any better, delivery time is over a year, at least for me. Waiting sucks!

STeven,

I'd like to see those Ruple's of yours if the pix are handy. They sound great.

I think it's a hit or miss proposition with getting a knife from Tony as he expressed to me recently. He's trying to cut back some and Reese is taking on the additional responsibility. That said, I'd highly recommend giving it your best shot. (I'm on Reese's list for a future project whenever my name happens to come up.)

keep your eyes on Jerry Halfrich
doing some awfully exciting work..wont break the bank and the two I have from him are the sharpest knives I own
hasnt made astockman yet but when he does it'll blow the barn doors right off

Wow, those are stunning! I'm glad I'm on his list, now I may have to rethink my pattern!

Elliott,

I don't have any pix of my slipjoints, but I'll try to take some this weekend and post over in traditional.

Thanks, STeven. That'd be great!

He doesn't do multi-blades at this time, but am on his contact list for when he does.

Thanks for the HU Riad, I owe you one, or more.;)

I had the same thought right after I saw RAN's post here. I placed an order with Jerry Halfrich for a Bose pattern Backpocket recently, but that Remington Guide is looking mighty good, and the Shadow is so sweet, and well, oh hell, I'll probably just have to order another. :D

Anyone know how to get a hold of Jerry Halfrich - I really like his knives shown in this thread?

Guys, all the makers that you have quoted are among the best however, one of the most unrecognized makers is Claude Montjoy. He is truly one of the best rounded makers in the business. And the prices for any of his work is way under priced.

We also need to add Terry Davis, C. Gray Taylor, Kaj Embertson, T.R. Overeynder and Warren Osborne to our list.[/QUOTE]

Never handled one of his knives but from the pics in the traditional forum but what about adding Ken Erickson to list as well.

I'm no slip joint expert but Harvey Dean is really making some killer slip joints. You might try to find some pics of his on Paul Shindler's web site.

Bill Ruple is a great one as are many that are named above.

I am excited to say that Bill Ruple is teaching a slip joint class at my hammer in the end of the month. I am really looking forward to watching his class as I would like to start making a few myself. He and Harvey will have slip joints for sale at the show I'm putting on as well.

Harvey is incorporating damascus and engraving in his slip joints as well.
