The makers who can expertly hand finish a flat ground carbon steel blade have a skill i call the PIMP STROKE.
Some examples are:
Burt Foster
Nick Wheeler
Adam DesRosiers
John White
Etc.

I would like other makers to respond, we have a critical eye for our own work and our contemporaries. This is out of respect for my contemporaries and friends who are part of the knife community. I have only named a few and not in any order they are great makers and there are more. KEEP A STRONG PIMP HAND BROTHERS!

Mike Quessenberry, Mike Vagnino, Henry Torres, Tom Ferry, Dan Pfanenstiel, Bill Burke, Ray Laconico are a few I can think of who's work I've seen in person. These guys know how to pimp stroke!

Ray Laconico is a name that deserves to be on that list and it's not because he mentioned my name in this thread. His work is off the chart clean.

Ed Henry

Everyone else behind him :)

Terry Vandeventer and Ron Newton are two more that come to mind. How about Jason Knight? Yes, I do think he's got it too! ;) :D

Larry Fuegen, Russ Andrews, Don Hanson and Kyle Royer make my list among others already named.

Most accomplished Master bladesmiths and some non-masters are very capable of laying down superb hand finishes.
Do they always? Maybe, maybe not. A stroll around the ABS section of BLADE Show will yield your answer.

I haven't found photos to be a very effective way to judge blade finishes.

JP Moss (before he retired) could hand sand a flat ground carbon blade like none other I have seen. Looking down the flats of the blade from the guard, his blades were as smooth as glass, not a whisper of a dip or a wave and the finish was a uniform satin, just awesome. As close to perfect as the naked eye could see. I've said it before in a post here but JP told me that none othe than Harvey Dean once asked hm at a knife show, how the hell he got his blades so flat. If that doesn't say something about his work.....

You all know about a Sfreddo guy but the blades from anothet Brazilian maker, Jacinto Melo, are not too shabby either. [grin]

Mr. Russ Andrews II, MS, immediately comes to mind when a hand-rubbed finish is discussed........ :)

I have a knife made by Terry Primos which has been stroked by a Pimp. Too bad he's outta the game :(

I'm sure few of you have had the sensuous pleasure of touching, much less looking at, one of Tim Wright's masterpieces or he'd have been mentioned already in this thread.

Simply world class fit and finish without ANY compromise...............
