The Pimp Stroke

Ron Gaston was the man!
Steve Jernigan
Bob Lum was no slouch in the hand satin department
Dusty Moulton
Warren Osborne
Jim Siska

My list is not all inclusive or about personality of the maker, or how well known they are.....it's about work that I have seen and held. When we talk about this finish, it is one that I have viewed at high magnification in good light....and discerned nothing but the creamy satin finish we all hope for.

I don't know guys, but that seems like unfortunate terminology. Aren't pimps usually considered a garish lot and have something to do with prostitution? I think of all you fine folks with your fine work somewhat differently. I wonder what other phrases might be conjured up to describe the phenomenon being referred to?

Don't forget about the original 'Pimp' hand finisher himself.. Mike Snody!!

I'm trying myself to replicate the SUPER clean hand sanded finish, and the more I try the more I appreciate just how much work goes into such a finish. Do any of the big DOGS have any tips for us mortals to try out, lest we keep sending our knives back to ya'll year after year for touching/cleaning up. I'm not totally against that by the way I just figured you might get aggravated by it .Mac

I'd like to add Shawn McIntyre to the mix.

Oh, and even though he doesn't generally do flat ground carbon steel blades, I've been very impressed by the photos I've seen of bladeforums member Bona's work. Many of his knives are hollow ground in a flowing Siska style grind, and his hand rubbed satin finishes actually follow the contour of the grind. Very cool. Here's a nice example from his website, bonaknives.com.

Since we moved to Stainless, too, how about Steven Rapp.

Win

I didn't move it to Stainless, Win, not that I think so anyway, pretty sure I have seen carbon steel versions from all makers listed above.

Yeah, Bona's work does look that good in person.

Well for all the knife experts out there, this was formally called something different. Pimp stroke may not be appropriate but the former is worst.
Knife trivia.
I know who can and who cant, I taught some of them, dead guys excluded. I did not intend this to be the "Best of" I wanted to recognize some fellow makers who currently do nice work. And they were represented.
My apologies to all of you in whatever way you have been offended, neglected, rejected and inspected or found wanting.
Really.
And on another thought If not for Jimmy Crowell people would only go to "Arkensaw" to shoot ducks.
James Black may have made Bowie's knife...
James Crowell taught some of the most famous bladesmiths how to make Bowie knives.

Jason,

Thanks for the mention in your original post.

Jim Crowell taught me to make Bowie knives, and Jason Knight outlined the "Pimp stroke" for me long ago at the Batson conference.

Credit to the Masters!

I know you didn't mean it that way, but "pimp" is typically interpreted as a derogatory word. At least to "old" guys like me:D Obviously, your intent was to acknowledge those with exceptional skills and I get that.

I agree that an alternate term might be chosen. But youthful segments of society have always re-purposed words and phrases and that's fine. Obviously the word is being used as a term of respect. But whatever word you use I think Joe Szilaski belongs on that list.
