Fiance heard me howling in the workshop/garage and came running in, guess she thought I hurt myself again.

3 knives, cleaning them up, 2 are supposed to be delivered Monday and there's freaking pits after heat treat. :barf:

I normally use the Don Fogg method of ATP-641 and some Satanite but I'm out of Satanite (waiting for Ellis to ship me some) and used some fireplace caulking instead. ARGHHHHHHHHH

I had these blades up to 800x with a final goal of one of them being 800x the other 2 1500x and now I'm having to hand sand at 220x

I'm plenty pissed at this moment.

Will,
I'm pretty sure I have some satanite if you need it. Make a trip to Maxwell and it's yours.

You never answer my emails.. are you dodging me? :)

I can't come on Maxwell AFB anymore since I got medicalled out and not retired thanks Big Green Weinie..... you forging out there? Iffen not you can come by the shop, I'm about 15-20 minutes from Maxwell.

Bummer. I heat treat mine at a 120 grit finish, then grind and hand finish after HT. Makes life mo better.

I never finish past 220. Like Don I normally keep it coarse. 60-120. Helps keep the clay in place. Also I have had pits from the clay and it really sucks having to do over your work again. but that is the nature of the illusive Hamon...

Sigh.... at least I have a VFD now so I can clean them up with a 180x apex at loooowwww speeds. Got one back to 1000x, 2 more to go. I've never had this problem with Satanite, there's something in that mortar that bonds to steel (done a little research) at high temps. It's actually designed that way to help it bond to flues and stovepipes.... shoulda found that out before I used it.

This customer is one of those that keeps me in steel and handle material, his motto is "you never have enough knives." I'm lucky that I got in early with him, he's a former employer of mine, I used to be his Quality Control Manager before I went to work for the National Guard full time several years ago. I'll post pics when I get them fitted up, pretty neat set if I may say so myself, it's my 'deer zipper" necker and a matching hunting knife for his son. Both have stainless guards, cocobolo and deer crown handles. Had to add the cocobolo because the antler came off of a small deer and way to curvy to make a really usable handle out of.
