the plaza cutlery custom knife show was a blast this last weekend. one of the highlights, for me, was meeting Chris Reeve and talking knives.

i figured i would share some of what he said with everyone here.

first off i asked "what knife are you carrying?" who wouldnt ask that? :D he pulled the ti lock prototype out of his pocket  he let me hold it and let me say it is extremely smooth, it is the smoothest knife i have felt. very cool!

also asked about a small umnumzaan Chris just laughed and shook his head no, sorry guys it isnt gonna happen.

more tidbits would be that all knives will change to S35VN eventually. also there will be a slight change to the design of the umnumzaan, i will just keep that a secret ;)

another thing he did was quickly, and i mean quickly  , sharpen my small sebenza on a sharpmaker. literally it took less than a few minutes.

if anyone in the greater southern california area missed this show, you missed out. it was a fantastic show, i advise anyone who is able to go in the future to do so.

Must have been great to talk to Chris reeve himself about his knives!
Could'nt you just inform us a little bit about this change in the design of the umnumzaan?

I also enjoyed the show, Chris is a great guy. And believe me when I tell you he really speaks what is on his mind.

I think Matt and I picked his brain for about a half an hour.

I also enjoyed meeting and talking to Chris and several other well-known and highly respected knifemakers. It was definitely worth the admission price!

Last years Blade show was the first big show I've been to. I met Chris, his wife and their crew and I will say that they are big reason why I stay with CRK's and for obvious reasons as well. That is their knives are amazing.
I can't say that for other very very popular knife company owners. One in particular. I haven't bought a knife from said company again. I have to respect the company to help support them. CRK' values their customers and I felt welcomed. He must love what he does.

that sounds great, im curious as to the design of the new zaan, does it have to do with the pivot and frame lock at all?

They are a very great company and awesome people

i dont want to go into great detail but, it does not have to do with the pivot/lock.

im not sure when the changes will happen, my guess would be when the Ti lock comes out sometime next year.

So how exactly does this Ti-lock mechanism work? Is it a true lock or a slipjoint kinda deal?

I handled the Ti-Lock recently when I went to Boise for a visit. (Thanks, Heather!*)

I think it would make a great EDC. No framelock or back lock to spoil the lines of the handle scales, very usable size, easy and enjoyable to open and close. Even the pocket clip is novel, sprung and interestingly shaped.

I wasn't really interested when I saw it on the web, but it's growing on me after seeing it in person. It's just a really pleasant little knife!

The lock is essentially a sprung thumbstud on top of the blade; it circles around the front of the scales and locks into the top. You push it back up to lift it out of the locking area. The spring is attached to the blade, which is very interesting. It's a true lock, though I doubt it would win any awards for strength (which was not its design goal, so I don't regard it as a fault).

The Hawks certainly live up to their reputation for innovation…

* I'd be happy to give it an extended evaluation if you're reading this :)

The Ti-Lock is easily one of the smoothest folders I have ever handled. The thumb groove functions very well. If you like a Spyderhole opener, you will like it as well. The lock itself took me a second to get the hang of, but I was able to get it to close one handed after a couple tries.

I will have one.;)

I spent a few minutes messing with that Ti Lock knife as well. I like it a lot. I really like the unique mechanism for opening and locking the blade. The clip has that little tab that lets you open it for easier clipping onto a pocket.

I can see that when it comes out if it is a reasonable size, I won't haul around anything with more than a 3" blade, I'll get one just because of the unique mechanism.

Later,
IHB

The only qualm I have with the Ti-Lock is the stonewash finish.

The main reason I haven't picked up a Zaan yet is the stonewash on the blade. I can tolerate it on some knives, but for the most part it puts me off entirely.

I/m the same way. I really dislike it but I just received a small micarta Sebenza and it has a stonewash blade and it looks very nice compared to the Zaan.
