The Police 4 LW might just be the best Spyderco ever.

Big knives lover here, and especially Cold Steel folders enthusiast, but man, this knife feels like it was made for me.

Lately I purchased a P4 SE in K390 and quite rapidly it became the only knife I actually want to carry every day. My other two favorite Spydercos, namely the M2 and the Yojumbo can't seem to do it for me anymore.

I might as well sell everything else and buy every variation of the P4. This knife really spoiled everything else for me. I carry it everywhere 24/7, even on my trail runs and bike rides. When I'm back after two hours in the woods all drenched in sweat I just wipe the blade and dry it, no rust whatsoever, and even when exercising hard you hardly feel it on you, yet it's there when you need it, be it for clearing the trail or God forbid the possibly of using it in self defence. I can draw and open this guy faster that both the Jumbo and the M2, no snagging because of the rough G10 texture of the Jumbo, and much comfier IWB than the M2 while still being grippier in hand.

This knife has it all.
As much blade as necessary for my "emotional support needs", unparalleled cutting power for the size in lightweight and thin package that can slip IWB and disappear completely. Easy to carry and light enough even for gym shorts, yet substantial with minimal flex on the handle, thanks to those reassuring steel liners that we don't see much of lately anymore.

Perfect ergos, perfect action and centering out of the box, great looking patina going on already, and after some break in I can even gravity flick it open like my other Cold Steels. Yeah yeah, there are smaller knives to carry, but especially for a cold steel lover like me...why settle for anything smaller if the biggest knife in the Spyderco line can be carried that easily anyway?

If I need to cut a toast at a bar for my kid I still have the Buck 55 in my wallet so nobody freaks out.

Many people argue that you don't actually need anything more than a 3" blades for EDC and that might be true for many, but honestly I must quote Lynn Thompson here, a big knife can do everything a small knife can do, and usually do it better...the other way around doesn't quite work. And if we're talking big knives I can't think of any other giving you so much for the size and weight.

Yeah some odd tasks might be comfier with a smaller blade, but I guess most of us are enthusiasts here and can relate to the satisfaction of flicking open a big blade like this, it's just a dopamine inducing activity to me.

Any other P4 LW freaks here?
I can easily say that this is my favorite Spyderco to this day, hell, maybe my favorite folder overall.

Lynn Thompson didn't whittle. There are some things for which a small blade is much more suitable. That said, the K390 SE P4 LW has ridden in the cargo pocket of my pants since it came out. It's my pocket chainsaw.

True that. I don't whittle either, I sometimes do feathersticks tho and for that I find that for such tasks I'm always faster with more blade, but of course I can see the point of having a small blade on you at any time, the 55 does it for me, but I gotta admit it doesn't come out often.

Most definitely!!

Hi Vnvman,

Thanx for the comments. I carry a P4 in SPY27 quite a it.

While Lynn and I might disagree on marketing strategies, I've always respected his quality.

Thanks Sal, and thank you for this great design. By becoming less pointy and more slicy the P4 really takes the utility of this design to a whole new level.

Many would say that with the more angled tip and the broader blade this isn't "really" a Police model, but I disagree. As much as I love the M2 the pointy tip can get annoying with daily tasks, and I don't think a more "civilized" one is much of a drawback for "stabby" tasks. I can't think of a police guy not appreciating the change, considering that a pocket knife on duty gets used for utility 99.9% of the time.

Any other Police variants/steels heading our way maybe?

Another G10 version would be my dream come true.
I missed the K390 sprint and I've been sore about it since.

Thanx Vnvman.

The P4 was one of those designs that I designed for me. Sometimes there are folks out there that have similar tastes.

We have an "experimental" Police Model in-the-works. I'm testing the "finger coil" concept against the "handle forward" concept. Knives are almost identical except for the difference in the two concepts. Both are G-10. Both are flat ground VG-10. Both have 5." blades. Some discussion on our site forum.

My VG10 P4 lightweight will never be sold. It is a special knife for all the reasons you mentioned. VG10 is underrated these days don't care what anyone says. I actually ground my spine to make it slightly more pointy, but left just enough down turn to be able to cut against skin (like wristbands etc) that the military 2 is a bit more pointy and less adept at. Still love my M2 salt as well they are basically my favorite 2 knives, I've sold a many since other knives from other makers after experiencing the larger Spydercos.

Here is my user P4 K390 with forced patina. I've also PE K390 but it stays in a box, safe queen and spare piece. I'm thinking about that Spy27 run. Knife is just well designed compared to others. Has jimping, functional choil, elegant lines. Long knife but still lightweight.

It's really cool to stick that much blade into a package that fits so nicely into the pocket. Today I was carrying the exact same thing: Police 4 in K390 serrated. I was doing some yard work, and the serrated Police was perfect for hacking through some viney plants.

That's what I'm missing in some other models. Great blade to handle ratio for a back lock knife. I would like to see smaller Police, something between Rookie and P4.

True that. I also like how the handle flows with the tang of the knife when folded, without leaving gaps that can snag pockets depending of carry preferences.
One thing that I'd love to see as well is an improvement in effective cutting edge doing away with the finger choil, or maybe just make it integrate better with the handle.
I guess that's what Sal is trying to do with the new prototypes and I'd be all for it.

For good measure I just ordered a Chaparral in SE. It looks like it's the natural born companion for the P4 LW SE, maximum cutting power for the size/weight with the thin stock and well ground serrations. Looking forward to it.
