The prepared, and the un-prepared.

There is always something it seems that hits home to me personally in every one of jackknife's stories that stirs great memories.

I still shoot with a .22 that my dad and uncle gave me when I was somewhere between 4 and 5. The stock has two places where it was cut off. As I grew they doweled and glued the cut pieces back on.

Nice story. Funny that you should post that now. I just happen to have my Grandfather's pocket knife on my desk right now. It's just a small Gentelman's knife. He carried it in the Spanish American War. I have it out as I'm in the process of oiling all my slip joints.

Anyway, thanks for the story.

The stories you come up with are, as always, great. I enjoy the simplest of stories about days gone by and this one was just another that gets bookmarked.

Funny thing about those old .22's. Aside from an old pocket knife, I don't know of any other thing that brings back memories as strong as an old family .22 with a history. I guess that's why I'm such a fiend for old .22's. Just the smell of that slightly sweet smelling powder sets off powerfull memories. No other powder smoke smells like a .22. I could just shoot a few old family .22's for the rest of my life and be perfectly content, without any other firearm.

jackknife - a sincere "thank you".

Your stories always carry me away. I hope you will publish these one day.

It is hard not to comment on each one I read but the link list has really helped pass a few graveyard shifts recently. I'm not sure who I enjoy more, the scoutmaster or the reverend.

Keep up the good work, sir!

Another fantastic story.

I wish I got to know my grandfather better. He died while I was still quite young, and the other died long before I was born.

Great story thanks for sharing. Great look on life, I work with a group or responders and we got few of them, when an event happens that we are to respond to they show up with nothing and just stand in the way.

Well, you ripped that one right out of my life. Only it was my son and me. I've got the pen, the flashlight, the knife, the eyewash bottle, and a few other doo-dads on me all the time. After seeing how "prepared" I was when these were needed, he has opted to follow in my steps.

Gotta take him shooting.

And for most of the animal kingdom, the pup learns by watching the older wolves. Now we have electronics.

I can only wonder what will happen when the Iphone and Ipad don't do it.

Well I finally registered after peeking around on here for awhile now. I must say that the traditional/slipjoint sub forum is what got me hooked. These stories from Jackknife are outstanding and very heart warming. I too am in the 50's age group and can really relate to the stories as well as to how everyone on here feels about traditional knives. I look forward to many enjoyable hours here!

Glad to have you join us Nightshifter and you are right Carl's threads set the tone around here and it is a great place due to the players.

I'm with Gus and couldn't agree more with you here Nightshifter. Carl is a fine fellow and the best story teller we've got in here. Welcome to the fold and we're pleased you're here. Have a seat in a comfortable chair. Set back and kick off your shoes and hang in here a while with us. :)

Best,
Anthony

i now carry a classic due to jackknifes stories about them over in multipurpose knives, and i must say there are a few time when it came in very handy.
