The price you paid

Like a lot of us I shop for knives often on the internet (duh) and I'm pretty surprised by the shift in prices over what feels like a short period of time. Overall I view this as a good thing give that prices going up mean companies hopefully getting more money and continuing to make great new designs. It's still funny though, I bought my leatherman wave 4 years ago from my local Bi-Mart (Oregon local store), for $70 new, I remember this clearly. No I can hardly find them for less than $90 new, which I still think is worth it given the quality of the tool.

I'm curious to hear stories from other members about knives you've bought years back and what the worth/price is today.

I watch this all the time and it has more to do with the devaluation of the dollar than anything else. I don't buy anything from Garrett Wade as a rule (too expensive) but I notice about a 5% increase on the items I'm interested in
every time I get a new catalog. Not all that much different than what goes on @ the grocery store; currency worth less all the time.

Yes, knife prices have been steadily going up. Wish I could charge more for my services. That is basically the rub....

I notice the pricing differences with SAKs especially since I tend to look at them a fair amount. For most other knives, I seldom notice.

Bi-Mart is only in Oregon? I never knew it was a local thing

Outside of "technology" and "commodities", I don't know anything that used to be more expensive than it is now.

Hand made, traditional replica, super precise, USER . . . woodworking hand plane. It is made by one of if not THEE best hand plane makers in the US. When I got it I went over it with precision metal working measuring tools including a Starrett Surface plate and it is flawless ! ! ! ! I sure got what I paid for. I have many iron and bronze hand planes that are NOT nearly as precise.

I paid $400 . . . and . . .
years ago I checked and what they were selling for on the web was double that.  (the makers had so many orders, 5 yr. back log, that they had to stop taking new orders.

Knives . . . I don't know . . . I am pretty happy with the prices of the mid to lower priced knives that I buy.

PS : the work bench is not quite THAT purple (purple heart wood) but the new high efficiency bulbs sure bring out the color for the photos don't they ? Ha,ha,ha

Starting in 2015, the U.S. Dollar rose in value sharply against the Euro, peaking in mid-October, 2016 and declining somewhat to only 5-6% increase in value.

US.: "Declines in prices of commodities such as oil, gold, other precious metals, and copper were an important factor behind the fall in the import price index. Those declines, as well as declines in prices for finished goods, were all caused in part by the strengthening of the U.S. dollar against the foreign currencies of the nation’s major trading partners in 2015."

The index of the cost of imported cutlery:
2012 126.8
2013 129.7
2014 129
2015 128.9
2016 125

Haven't priced out anything recently, but in 2013 I bought my Spyderco Gayle Bradley for $145, now its going for $185 and a ZT 0801 for $160. I know for a long time the ZT was $192.

Its definitely the mass production knives that see the most price fluctuation.

zt0801 is much cheaper now because it is discontinued.

To be fair so is the Gayle Bradley, but I think those are still popular and in demand enough that prices for NIB might actually be climbing as supply drops.

Better comparison might be the Bradley 2; same materials, similar size and design, $138.
