The Proper Way to Use a Knife (Prying with a folding knife)

How can people on a knife forum really think that doing that with an Emerson would hurt it? I have never been to a place where people are more afraid of using knives than on this forum...

Frankly I find it hard to believe that there's anybody on this forum - people that carry knives so they're better prepared - wouldn't have a purpose built or at least more suitable tool to open a bottle with.

Yeah, holy mackerel. Maybe you arent smart enough to do this properly, but I have been opening bottles with knives for at least 10 years and have be never cut myself. Theres really no more risk in cutting yourself with the knife when doing this vs cutting something like normal. Maybe you drink too much.

FYI I stabbed through a piece of sheet metal to fix a friends truck yesterday. Not a scratch on it. Anyway, it occurred to me, the quicker I ruin my knife, the quicker i get to buy a new one. :p

I don't consider this prying, it's light work, and it isn't ruining the edge. You're good to go. Prying should count as anything that would need a specialized tool to separate it without breaking.

That is what my Attwood Prybaby is for.;)
See, this seems more ridiculous to me than prying with the knife. Buying an exensive separate little pocket tool to save your knife ends up costing more unless you're dealing with a very expensive knife. Not a lot of logic in this unless you intend to pry things open or apart on a regular basis.

Master the mysterious power of leverage, and almost anything becomes an effortless bottle opener.
This. I used a box of mac and cheese before just to prove it can be done.

If popping a bottle like that hurts any of my knives, I'll junk drawer them and buy something better. It amazes me how people underestimate the usefulness of a knife as a VERY modular tool.

Yep, ive done it before using the spine of my folder. Done correctly, it takes a minimum of force to lift the cap.

I just use the butt end of a folder if I have nothing else available. Usually doesn't even leave a mark in the handle material.

Bic Lighter works for me if I don't have the proper tool but if the OP wants to open his beers with his knife go for it.
