The purpose of Titanium Handles

It's great to have choices, and my choice for folder handles will always be titanium whenever possible.

Oh no, don’t tell me that’s a 0392WC under that other scrap metal 😳

Some beautiful knives here so yes it’s pretty and durable I just find it cold and in many situations unpleasant to handle. My apologies for abandonment of this post but we had an unexpected bereavement.

Rock Lobster. Blade HQ special.

The original was another everyone hated it till it was discontinued and then it got popular. Design by Jens Anso.
looks like he smashed as much blade length into that design as he could.

new one to chase thanks.

Funny thing for me. My most-carried knives are CRK, but I'm utterly bored by titanium scales. I don't think I need any more in my life. (Famous last words, of course...)

Of course the titanium fetish is mainly a folder thing, and for the last while I've mainly been buying fixed-blades and autos. I'm not sure if that's a cause or a symptom of that boredom.

I love Titanium - way lighter than steel. So many steel frame flippers could’ve been that much better with Titanium.

THAT SAID, I wish they’d start using more exotic metals like magnesium and super aluminums.
There are some very strong and light options out there that are superior to titanium.

2055 Lithium Aluminum
2099 Lithium Aluminum
Magnesium/Aluminum Blend

Yes Please

....Same thing for the latest fad "super" steel. Stamp 20CV or Magnacut on the blade and you can charge twice as much. Does the material actually costs that much more than CPM154, etc? Doubt it....

There is a great thread going on regarding how much the cost of the steel itself impacts the overall cost of the knife.

The summary is that, besides the cost of the steel, you have to take into consideration the ease of working each particular alloy. From the cutting/grinding to the HT to the final polisthing... Some steels eat through mills and abrasives and require complex HT... That is much more important than the cost of the steel itself.

While those are valid points, I still think there is a hefty "marketing markup" when a company sells a knife in the latest popular steel.

That's also very very true! I will not deny it! The easiest way to avoid paying premium... is to stay away from the latest super-steels... until something new comes out and then is not such a novelty any more!
