I had a brother in law just as described for 25 years. 5 more too, along with 4 sister in laws. That's not counting the ones that married into that family.
They were from the republic of Ireland, not northern Ireland, which is part of the UK still IIRC ( or is it the commonwealth? )
Anyway, I say just forget it unless he shows a desire for one. I couldn't get my Irish inlaws to do anything with knives except embarrasingly say "um, thanks", and put the knife away to never be seen again.
He wouldn't even carry a knife in his job as a union painter here up in Boston. Not even after getting mugged a few times, and his girlfriend getting attacked in front of him.
You can lead a horse..... etc.
