The real poverty of Nepal. Here's just one story.

Yesterday up at the Manakamana shrine there were five porters passing by carrying heavy loads in dokas on their backs. I asked them how many KG they were carrying.

"Forty KG, five kilometers, ten rupia," the lead porter said.

I shook my head and replied, "Little brother, that is not much pay for that heavy load."

"Nepal ho," he said and continued on his way.

Think about it, boys. Here are five men carrying 88 pounds on their backs, most of the 3 mile distance uphill and for a paycheck of about 15 cents. There is nothing I can do for this man and his comrades because he cannot make a knife or scabbard but ,God, how I wish there was.

Perhaps this will help you understand why the kamis and sarkis want to hold us up as gods and pray for us daily. It is poverty most of you will never see or understand but it is there and more real than I can tolerate. My heart aches for those men and the many others in similar circumstances.

I must work harder when I get back.

Blessings from all of us in Nepal to all of you.

Khukuri FAQ

Reading your post, Uncle Bill, makes me better realize how blessed we Americans are. Also, I feel ashamed about ever having complained about my lot in life. There were times when I really thought I had it bad -- I really didn't know what bad was.

Uncle Bill- What effect has the infusion of good old American Dollars had on the Birgorkha community. I'd hope that the old 'trickle down' effect would enable other, non kami lives, to be improved from our support; as the kamis are able to have some disposable income to circulate in their community.
Always a pleasure Uncle Bill,
Sutcliffe

As a matter of fact, the trickle down effect does work and is alive and well at BirGorkha.

And, it ain't over 'till it's over. There is more to be done and I am looking for ways and finding a couple.

Stay tuned and blessings from all of us here in Nepal.
