Hi Buck Fans,

I'm really fascinated by the old(er) Buck knives.
I love the History and the changes the knives went through.
I'd love to see pics of the oldest old ones, the early days.
Let say up until 1975 and perhaps even a bit earlier if possible.

In my collection there's one that stands out by age.
It’s a -no dots- inverted 110 made in 1967/70.

The number '110' is not yet etched/stamped on the blade.
The handle is slimmer and less thick. The nail nick is thin and shallow.
There’s also just one pin in the handle; the rocker bar only.
It really is a Buck 110 in development.

If you have old Buck knives to share please do, I’m looking forward to see them.

Hello wouter1967,

If you haven't been to the 110 HISTORY WEBAGE I've created, drop in and check it out.

My earliest is this pair of BUCK*. My understanding is that the asterick was only used in or around 1967. I would love to have an earlier one that had a Lucite handle and a blade forged from a file.

Hello pjsjr,

Do you know of other bucks (model # / year) with the Asterisk date code ? The two knives shown are the 118 top and the 103 bottom ? The 2021 June BOTM has an asterisk for the date code - the asterisk is due to a mistake during production. The date was not selected during production and defaulted to an asterisk.

Thank you

I don't think that the asterisk on the '67 models is meant as a date code. IIRC, it was to signify a change(I'm not sure what changed). I remember a seeing a photo of a model 102 with the asterisk on this forum. As Bert said the 110 3VV1 has one.

An informative thread - https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/118-inverted-asterisk.1423980/

- 1967 was the year the asterisk was used; and only used during a short time that year (most people on the forum agree to 1967 - some say late 1966 to early 1967). The thread says the rest.

I guess I'm a little surprised not seeing more photo's.

Let's see some more please :)

Ha, ha, It was my photo  I found it yesterday going though some for the SPS...yep, I'm old but at least I remembered seeing it!

Great pics ! I had to put on my glasses for this picture - and I am only seeing the knife in a picture, not in hand (this picture being the most clear and close up view of the asterisk mark I have seen), and the mark on these knives has been called an Asterisk for years - but that asterisk looks like a dot to me !

I can understand trying to differentiate from the regular dot dating system, but a dot is a dot and an asterisk is a different symbol. Am I just not seeing the mark clear enough, or is the 'asterisk' mark really a dot that everyone calls an asterisk ? (Emperor has no clothes)

I'm not saying anyone is wrong with the labeling of their knives or years.

After I took the close up photo of my 102 I noticed the same thing. I went and looked at the 103 and 118 I had photographed and it looked like a dot to my naked eye. I got a small magnifying glass and looked...it is a dot...have we been deceived all this time!
