After letting this knife hang in my shop for well over a month I decided to change the S guard for a more simple flat oval guard. Before I did that I did bend the bottom of the S a fuzz but I still didn't like it. Its a done deal now so there's no turning back. The blade is 9 3/4" out of the new batch of 1084 that Aldo Bruno had made up. Fittings are wrought iron and one of the nicest pieces of sambar stag I have gotten my hands on. I've got a before and after picture of it.

Ray,
I like the new and improved version better.  The other one, to me at least just looked a little bit out of place. I think much better flow on this one. Great job!

Very nice either way:thumbup: , however, the S guard does look a touch restrictive. Very nice hamon!!

The sign of a true master is one who is not afraid to mess with near perfection. I really liked the original version, and couldn't get my mind around a way to improve upon it. However, you did get your mind around a way to improve upon it. Very nice Ray!

I just plain don't like S guards, but the one you had was as good an example as I've seen. It's a gorgeous knife either way

Is that a lanyard ring on the new version?

Beautiful work either way but I do prefer the oval guard over the s guard. I don't know why, maybe it looks more "American". Not that that matters but it just looks like a classic bowie with that oval guard.
God bless,
Stitch

i like the S but after a look or 2 it does look a little out of place on that piece, the new simple version is nicer IMHO

All my knives have a nipple ring which can be used for a lanyard.

I've got a saw steel san mai blade that may inherit the hand me down S guard from this one if I can make the adjustments without screwing it up. I may just have to make a special blade for it. I've always liked S guards but not on this knife.

Thanks for the reply's!

I like 'em both Ray S gaurds are a personal favorite of mine  Both peices are still uniquely you.

That is one beautiful knife. I agree with everyone else that I prefer it with the oval guard. Never been a big fan of S-guards for function or form. Just not my cup of tea.

You definitely said it right, that is one beautiful piece of stag for the handle.

Thanks for sharing.

The S guard looks like it would be more at home on a drop point with the first inch or so of the false edge sharpend and a smooth wood handle... a fighting knife not an utility knife... think Main Gauche :P

on that blade and handle the oval is much more in context, just looks better.
