Ok I've been waiting to see this one since I first saw the trailer a month or so ago ( Star Wars can gargle my juevos!) I'm hoping it's chock full of wilderness survival scenes and not too much of " I just got out the freezing river and now there's a cozy fire in front of me". I'm seeing and reading great location facts as well as the manner of which the scenes were filmed like using no artificial light sources. It looks to be epic what do you all think?

I will be seeing this one as soon as I can! Always loved the mountain man survival stories! Not to concerned about how close to actual events it may or may not be. I am just hoping for a great story :)

The recent trailers don't look as appealing as the earlier ones, but I'm still on board for a viewing.

forget Star Wars....the revenant is the movie I really wanna watch.

The movie is loosely based on a book by the same name. The book is loosely based on the actual account in history. The historical account itself changes depending on which history you read and who was doing the telling through the person who wrote the history down and that of course translates to the possibilty that perhaps a lot of it was embellished, elaborated and exaggerated.
I think one would enjoy it more as a stand alone movie rather than a historical depiction. It is not going to be like the television show "Alone" but more like a revenge storyline reminesent of Seraphim Falls . That's just my opinion, but having a deep interest in Jim Bridger and John Colter and Hugh Glass, which motivated me to read the novel in the first place, as far as the movie is concerned, I was hoping for something a wee different.

I just watched Seraphim Falls recently, not a bad movie. At this point I'm just looking for a good movie that's not just a ton of computer generated nonsense. I have The Revenant book in storage I'll have to dust it off.

I plan on seeing it, but going to try to not look at it as a documentary. Yes Hugh Glass did exist but this isn't a story of his life as far as I remember the stories.

I am glad I know, or at the least have some idea of what happened, and don't remember anything about a son being the reason for revenge.

I haven't read the book, is the death of the son the reason for the revenge in the book?

It's awesome ... The bear attack alone was worth the price of admission. One of the most intense things I have seen on the screen.

Saw it this weekend at a limited release. It was pretty intense and a couple of people walked out of the movie, I guess they it expected something different. My gf was both impressed and horrified by what he had to endure. I thought it did the time period and story justice and would definitely recommend it.

Watched it three times ...incredibly authentic from that time period 1820s. If you are looking for romance forget it.the movie is a badass story of violence and revenge.i do not know if it happened as depicted but it really has my endorsement.

Oh yes... I am watching this one. Looks fascinating. I saw the preview for it before "The Big Short". That preview caught my attention immediately. Trapping and hunting in what's now Montana in the 1820s? That was extremely far from civilization and American "civilization" was pretty undeveloped back then. Should be intense.

I'm going this weekend.According to what I have read,H.Glass was captured by the pirate John Lafoote and subsequently escaped by jumping overboard .He then traveled from Louisiana only to be captured by the Pawnee who killed his companion but spared Glass who had vermillion(used to make red face paint) which he gave to the Pawnee chief who befriended him.He escaped the Pawnee near St.Lois and hired to trap up the Missouri River. He was the lone survivor of a scrap with the Sioux and escaped by canoe going back down to St.Louis. We all know his bear mauling, being left by his friends(even taking his rifle and food) who thought he could not survive;his epic journey back to civilisation alone and with help from the Sioux.Glass is killed by an Arikara war party ,near Williston,ND 11 yrs after his epic survival feat while returning from a trapping expedition in 1833.

I've seen it, real solid movie. Though I doubt it'll earn DiCaprio an Oscar as it felt a little hurried at the end.
