the right 22 rifle?

Daizee. off the top of my head, I am not aware of any bolt action 22 made today that will take shorts, longs, and long rifles from a detachable magazine.

Box magazines are designed so that the OAL of a cartridge is very important. If you put shorts, or longs in with long rifles you could get some serious jams or even misfires if the primer on one cartridge hit the primer on a cartridge that had moved foreward in the magazine. This is not an issue with tubular magazines.

Marlin 39a is extremely accurate, has a good clip capacity (sorry couldn't help myself!!!) ah hem, good magazine capacity, smooth fast reliable action, flat sided making it easy to carry and has sling swivels already. A sling should be mandatory for a woods rifle.

The AS model might be a better choice for those who insist on carrying a round in the chamber as this model is drop safe but the older A model is not. Most people don't realize most of the commercially made rifles and shotguns are NOT drop safe. Unfortunately too many hunters and woodsmen/women find this out the painful way. If the rifle/shotgun is dropped or slips out one control it could potentially discharge even with the safety on.

Finally the 39a or AS model which is called the "a" now has a rebounding hammer and transfer bar safety block breaks into two pieces for ease of cleaning and to carry similar to the 10/22 TD model. Heavier granted but a highly accurate and practical alternative.

I love my 39M, and the short barrel makes it handy and gets more out of a .22 than the long one, but I've NEVER felt a "smooth" action on a 39. Might take mine to the woods yet...

I've got a Ruger 10/22 and couldn't be happier with it, I'm actually thinking about getting another one.

I noticed a Ruger take-down rifle in the suggestions.

Two other take-down possibilities are the Marlin 39A lever gun (various lengths, Mountie being the short one). Feeds & shoots .22 LR, .22 Long, .22 Short. Mine has a cheap scope that I never bothered to remove after I bought it. Darn thing is still zeroed, though. Bottle caps at 50 yds.

I rather imagine you won't find a 39A new. No worries, old is good.

Another take-down proposition is the Marlin P70SS Papoose. Weighs very little, fits in carry bag. Comes with 7-round mag, will accept the 10-round mag from the Marlin 795. I have both mags for mine. (BTW, the 795 is a nice little lightweight rifle in its own right.)

The Papoose will accept an optic (has rail).

If consistent accuracy is more important than weight, the the 39A is a fine candidate.

If weight is more important, then the P70SS is worth a look.

I paid under $400 for the 39A. I paid under $250 for the Papoose.

I wouldn't call my Marlin 39A "smooth" in terms of the action. The smoothest levers I have shot are the Browning BLR and Henry.
