The Right Khukuri

Thanks everyone. I had no idea these great stories would show up here but I am glad everyone took the time. I hope everyone gets to read these. Thanks again.

My old Sanu made YCS has always been my choice for a all around woods/hunting khuk.
I would not want to face a bear with any khuk, but if needed I am sure it would fair better than me. Bear spray, my YCS and a good high power firearm would all be aspects of what I would carry in bear country

Man that is sweet! I have an AK Bowie by Sanu and the fullers on your YCS are just like mine. His fullering is the best Ive ever seen:thumbup: The one second to left is Sanu. You can see the similarities eh? The two to the right are Bura's.

You are right, Sanu made some of the nicest fillers. Clean and smooth. I have an older Kesar made Gelbu Special that has similar smooth clean fullers.
Great looking blades you have there.

Quite a lineup of Bowies! Gotta go empty my drool cup.

And two Bura's to boot. I better get a larger drool cup.

ArchAngel, that YCS makes me cry, it's so beautiful. I might have to put gutters in for my tear ducts. Seriously. Gorgeous.

I acquired a gorgeous YCS myself with a little help from a friend, thought it was the most goodest YCS known to man. But I was wrong, you got the goodest.

ArchAngel, that is one fine looking blade there. I love both the handle and the blade. Gorgeous. You didn't say how big she is though..

It is truly a great looking lineup. I also love his fullers. My 21 1/4" Bowie has those gorgeous fullers and they really add to the blade, I think.

I remember you getting that made. Did you post pics of it? Id love to see that monster. I think you probably have the record there for AKB. I have an 18" by Vim but cant imagine adding 4 inches to it. I love your monsters man! You and philllll got some crazy stuff:thumbup:
Here's a Yuvraj Bowie with similar fullers.

If you're set on a khukuri, I'm personally looking at an 11" kabjawal from Gurkha Khurkuri Knife Industry. Seems great as an all-around, but I would say if you're worried about getting attacked by animals you might want to go with a large straight knife (smatchet, bowie, sharp-tipped machete, etc...). The reason being that if something is really close, you'd probably need to stab it- thus, the idea of a straight blade that you could stab over your shoulder or behind you or in a wrap-around way (like if you were face-to-face with a person & trying to get them in the back from in front). A WASP injection knife might work, but it needs "ammo" (C02 cartridges). That said, it might work on the first stab. Flares are supposed to repel bears very well, even at a distance. Also, cracking it on the muzzle or where the muzzle meets the head (I think it was there that was suggested in the Mors Kochanski video) might be a good idea.

A possible issue with the khukuri could be getting it out of the sheath in a non-optimum way during an event, but then again it has some natural retention instead of being pulled from the sheath when rolling around on the ground & through the brush.

I remember a story about a moose attack in Alaska where the guy tried to stab it with his machete & it just bent, but he managed to shear one of its legs off with a slash. Not saying you've got a lot of change with a bear in this way, just making a point that a khukuri has some limitations with countering animal attacks.

Going up against a bear with any edged weapon put the odds greatly in favor of the bear.

Yeah, Phill and I both do. I will have to take pictures again. This is a really special looking Bowies. It is gorgeous man!!

If I remember, it's around 17", and 27oz. The fittings are silver. That's why they look blackish. I think I got it around 2002 IIRC.

The YCS will always be one of the most graceful and beautiful khukuri ever IMHO.

when i was stationed in kodiak we could see griz roaming the flat mountain just across the bay from our cutter's mooring. we had a three inch gun on the bow that might get thru their hair. with armour piercing rounds.

i've mentioned the two marines killed by a bear there before. after they annoyed it with their 1911's. i also mentioned the trip to the range back in the woods there. i carried a 8 in., bowie back then, on my hip near a walker colt. my only almost encounter with one (it tracked me in to the range (which was just to the left of that flat mountain), and about a mile walk into the woods, which i only found out on the way out by observing it's paw prints on top of my incoming foot prints in the new spring snow. i felt under-dressed with my .300 mag rifle, and didn't even consider the bowie. it was dusk & i paid a great deal of situational awareness as i returned to my car - cocked and locked of course.

if i were there now, i might carry an m43 khuk, but wouldn't think of using it on a bear. their hair is thick enough to act like kevlar armour. it would be a last desperate choice if all else failed and a lucky strike might be successful.

the bears are normally not all that agressive, unless they have cubs, or in the spring when they are very hungry after hybernating, or if they are curious (don't wear female deer urine). it's best not to take chances tho. the kodiak natives would hunt them with .22 magnum rifles. i asked one how they could kill a bear with a .22 - they told me you sneak up on them and stick the muzzle in their ear then fire, and if they see you before you get close enough, you run like hell. p.s. - the guides were carrying .338 win mag rifles or larger. my .300 win mag was considered the minimum.

In Alaska, a big grizzly once approached within 10 feet, while I was armed with a 12 gauge (loaded with slugs). I didn't even raise the gun. I was sleeping at the time. The next morning, I found the tracks outside my tent.

My buddy previously had an in-your-face encounter with a grizzly that he ran into while fishing. He was unarmed, apart from his pocketknife, yet he walked away from the encounter with nothing worse than wet pants. He dropped down and curled up into a ball, face down with his hands over his neck. He said that the bear came right over to him and started sniffing him, and when he felt the bear's breath in his ear, his bladder spontaneously released. The bear walked away.
