The right tool for the right job...

Great minds...;):D

Yeah, but if there's any great mind at work at my end, I gotta give credit to my old man. I'll aways remember something he told me once, when I asks him about his little Case peanut. He told me that he carried just what he needed for most of what he did in real life. If something really out of the ordinary came up, he'd just use the tools he was used to using everyday, to improvise a bit and get by.

I guess if my old man could get by in life with a peanut, after all he did, then it must be good enough for me?

►The apocalypse is likely going to happen only once. And folks have been saying it would be "any day now" since biblical times.
►Daily cutting chores happen...daily.

That makes it easier to choose what kind of stuff to take as I walk out the door for the day.

This made me laugh Frank, but it's also very true :D

You know Carl, it's funny - Unless we were going fishing and he packed a filet knife I've never known my dad to carry anything larger than a small pen knife (nowadays he totes a Leatherman Micra since it's so much easier for him to open) and I'm definitely in for a bemused look and some sort of sarcastic comment ("You sure you don't need something bigger to open that box...?" or some such) if I happen to whip out anything larger than a medium stockman or so in his presence).

You're well prepared with that duo! [emoji106]
That's not a pair, that's a trio! I was sadly in NYC for 9/11 and ever since I have carried a mini flashlight with me. I maybe have needed a few dozen times a year at most but boy do they come in handy.

I usually have a preon with me but I also sometimes carry a Fenix cr123a mini light. They throw a different beam so sometimes I carry one over the other.

I used to just have one or two knives that did everything for me. But now I have knives tucked away in almost every place I control. I carry only one knife. But since I've been hanging in the traditional forum, some sort of slip joint goes with my lock. Rocking a Spyderco sage 1 and sodbuster junior today. Most times though I carry a SAK Alox cadet as my smaller blade.

BF is super enabling! I've been looking for one of my half whittler's for a week now. Rather than continue looking for it I just ordered another one. I figured if I find the one I lost I'm going to stuff it into my car's change holder.

When I was in the hospital in April, all I had on me was my Damascus peanut. I left everything else in my truck. I asked family members to take my other knives home, fearing they would be burgled (is that just a word Tolkien came up with?), and placed my Damascus nut in the care of family. When I got out, I had my trusty Victorinox blue alox farmer in my pack behind the seat, and tossed that in my pocket until I could get my other knives at home. I did have my blue alox classic on my keyring while I was in the hospital.

I always have my Damascus peanut, and leave some slipjoints in the truck.

Put a little Keychain sak on your keys and you'll be good to go. So if you have one, that'll take care most of your general needs and your PM2 can serve as a heavier duty or self defense knife if need be. I just carry a folder and a sak bc I have other "Pen, Light, Knife, Multitool" sets at my other "stations." (Emergency bag-stays in trunk, EDC bag-if not on me its in the trunk, and Home)

cchu, if you start carrying your Trapper in a belt pouch, we just might have to make you an "honorary Texan!" More people carry those in that manner down here than any other type of knife!

Ron

I always keep a SAK in the console of my truck and one in the glove box of my wife's car. Then I carry two knives every day. A traditional in my pocket and a modern folder of some sorts attached with the pocket clip. This is todays carry knives , the SAK that's stashed in the truck, A Kershaw Blur and an old Case.

the apocalypse was a done deal, i mean i'm pretty sure it happened already and i was out of town?
better have a slipjoint, a good one preferably carbon steel. your favorite Swiss Army Knife and a small pair of pliers.
a crayon, a few tooth picks and a tuna fish can and 3ft. of small diameter wire. this stuff will come in handy...
all good.

I just ordered a sheath from TX, as soon as it comes in I'm going to take a shot of it, lol.

I was in downtown NOLA during Katrina, I now EDC a light also as well as something else that emits a quick flash....(or two...or seven...) weird world we live in these days never hurts to be prepared..

I was in Corpus last month and some type of south texas ranchers association meeting was going on at the Omni where was staying, I would say have never seen so many trappers on belts on one place before....or F350 super duty's with brush guards on the grill either for
that matter...

 Care to venture a guess as to what most of those guys were carrying? Case? Moore Maker? GEC? Eye Brand? Something else?

I left the canal street cutlery trapper at home this week, and have been pocketing the whittler. Flashlight is always the same though. Not sure which I like better these aaa light or the cr123's.

Wow, since I am moving very soon to the Texas hill country, does this mean I may have to start carrying a…(clears throat nervously) trapper?

:D

All about the right tool for the job at hand. These days thats a slipjoint with this lot of tools for work, and a locking folder for most of the weekend since I never know where I'll end up.

The multi-tool could do everything I need, but not well.

Just when you leave the house, Carl. :) When I lived Oklahoma, it seemed every guy had a pickup (I had a Chevy Nova). But, I've found that a stockman is acceptable everywhere. So, you're good to go.

I've found that Carl's philosophy of a small or medium slipjoint with a Vic Classic is a good combo. For most of my life, except for knifeknut diversions, that's all I've carried. It's helped in everyday situations and the occasional emergencies.

Sounds like Carl needs a mini trapper then to be official! Best of both worlds.

For me the trapper is just a fan favorite. I can't profess to loving all traditional patterns but I have a real fondness for the particular patterns that I do favor. I'm usually stuck on whittler/pen knives and trappers, sodbusters for the most part. And pretty much many if not all of Schrade and Buck's versions of whatever. There's something about those brands that are very likable to me.

The locking trapper like this one below is just perfect though. It's a folding steak knife, paring knife, bird and trout all in one. It has as much real estate as a regular one hand folder yet slim enough and good looking enough to not scare a soul when you whip it out in public to use even in the republic of NJ!
