Well to be fair, McCarthy often writes passages in some of his books in Spanish without any translation.

I like his style but his lack of quotation marks can get confusing at times.

Yeah, that. Come on Phil, the dude is probably the greatest living American writer. And I'm no literary snob. Stephen King is on my shelf right next to McCarthy.

He is not the "greatest living American writer," though of course such a judgment is wildly subjective. He is a talented writer, sure, but I would have a lot more respect for his work if he set aside the stylized approach and simply wrote in English, according to reasonably standard rules of punctuation and grammar. I don't think that's asking too much. I have a lot more respect for writers who can write well within those standards than the ones who try to get gimmicky and do something strange.

I said earlier in this thread that I can't get through The Moon is a Harsh Mistress even though I like a lot of Heinlein's work -- because it's written in that stupid character argot that makes it, for me, impossibly annoying to absorb.

I'm sorry you are so terribly offended that there exist in this world people who do not share your opinion of this particular author. You can join Pshrynk on my ignore list.

I will start by saying I loved the book so much I have read it three times. I also find that it does hurt the soul a little to read it. Anyone who previously fantasized about the "perfection" of surviving after SHTF comes to Jesus after reading that. This is not a dig at anyone, just an observation.

^^^^ I'm an agnostic and I can relate :-)

It's a bleak view of human nature.

Exactly how I feel. The book is amazing at creating feelings of oblivion and loneliness even in my agnostic heart.

for those who wanted to know, Viggo Mortensen is playing "the man".

The other point I wanted to make, should make the film killer.

Just a word to the unwise - this is not "writing style" discussion forum. Let's not keep going in that direction.

Yup, I agree with you Brian. This is a tough crowd when they start attacking a man's avatar.

In defence of the attackers -- he looks so mean and looks so daaaaarrrrrnnnnn scary with that big sword and the ninja clothes . Perhaps attacking his avatar is preemptive and justified? :p

Well I got the book on Tuesday and finished it yesterday. It was a very good read, and also would reccomend it.

I hope the movie goes right to DVD cause I hate getting ripped off in a theatre.

Aw geez Phil, now you've hurt my feelings.

And BTW its not just my opinion. Don't forget he won a Pulitzer (and no, I'm not on the committee).
