Hello,
Im looking for a relatively small knife. I really like the rookie...kinda leaning toward the stainless handled model. I understand this knife is new, and it is a scaled down version of the police, which, from what i hear, is a pretty darn good knife. What do you have to say about the Rookie?
Thanks,
Dan

oh my god! Please, please dont all talk at once! I can bairly handle this bombardment of replies. Thank you all. Oh, yes i have used the search option, but i was looking for some newer info.

Dan-

If you like a smaller knife- get the rookie. I have one with the G-10 handle and love it. I bought a steel handled one for my Dad for last Christmas with his initials engraved. He really likes it.

It is as durable as the Police and has an excellent blade geometry for a small knife. I got both in the straight edge due to preference. The G-10 has a ATS-55 blade if I am not mistaken.

Buy one- you won't be disappointed. You might also look for either a Calypso JR. with micarta handles or a Jess Horn with micarta handles- also great small knives.

Try the soon to be discontinued Standard G10. Nice ergonomics, good gripping texture, lightweght, and sharp for sure. I believe it is a tad longer and bit more robust with a thicker than average blade than its comparable siblings.

Thank you! Now i cant decide if i want the G10 or stainless handle. I think i'm going to go with the G10. I like it so much on my starmate.

say, do the screws that hold the clip on in the G10 version screw into metal inserts that are set into the handle?

Dan

Yes, on newer Rookies there is one metal liner in which the clip screws are inserted.
Just check to see if the Rookies your are checking out is newer version.

I have a steel-handled, plain-edge Rookie, the blade is ATS-55. I like the toughness of the stainless model, and it's not too heavy as it's small.
I hear the Rookie is due to be discontinued, which is a shame. The edge has a good belly to it, especially for a small knife.

It's funny-I came to the Spydie forum tonight with the intention of posting a "Love my Rookie" thread-now I don't have to. I have the standard G10 model, ATS 55 blade. Great knife. It is the perfect daily carry for me at work. Handy as all get out, and if you don't think it could be potent in a confrontation, think again. The G10 is grippy, the blade is a lance, and the hole makes deployment lightning fast. Ditto with the tip-up carry. Got mine from E-Bay. I can't believe they are going to discontinue them-I thought they would sell like hotcakes!

I have a stainless handled rookie and really like the knife. Just a nice shape blade and handle. Handles are thin which make it easy to carry and not too heavy.

Got a friend interested in Spyderco knives and his first knife by choice was the rookie. Has been using it hard for the last 2 months and really likes it.

Definitely ought to add one to your collection....
