Ok..so Cabela's in Buda is having a sale thing tomorrow and this rifle is on the list. Cost about $300 with tax and I am debating getting one for a backpacking/truck gun. It has .22, 12-ga, and .243 win. barrels. Has anyone used this thing or handled it? Is it worth the money?

You bet. I used to packone of their .38's when I worked the farm. Never failed. Just failed to stay on the hip...no idea where it is...

I have one. I love mine. It makes a great back up/backpacking/foraging/travel gun. I put Williams aperature sights on the rifles along with raised front sights to match. The T/C encore one fits the scope mount holes IIRC. The .22 will cloverleaf at 25 yards off of bags. The 20g is great and super compact. I havent shot the .243 much. I keep it in one of my vehicles most of the time. It seems to be a little more prone to rust than most of my other firearms. I will probably paint it with some sort of coating to make it a little more weather proof. I think I paid about $250, plus tax & lic, for it about 3-4 years ago.

The lop is very short. I am not small and it doesnt bother me. Just dont expect a full size rifle.

I live in michigan and those where $219.98 at dicks last week .I had the same questions you had about the gun ,I asked a buddy who has every gun ever made and his answer was I wouldn`t like it that "they are junk" so I ran that through the filter I use for everything he says (he hates everything) and asked a few follow up questions and found out that they shoot just fine but they are a little ruff in fit and finish .

I should add a note...If I don't make the sale for this one, I will be buying probably a .410 Tamer like this one:

And then packing something like this in tandem:

I figure I can get a variety of shells for the .410 and can take care of pretty much anything I will anticipate down here in TX and the .17 HMR will be a handy lil' gun just to keep on the hip/in the pack.

I saw the ad for these in the recent Dick's flier, looks like an interesting little combo. I'd prefer a .308 over the .243 though.

x39...since I have a .30-06, I don't need the .308. Doesn't mean that will stop me from buying one in the future, but this looks like a handy pack gun. Anybody know if there are Dick's SG in the Austin area? Ron53, ROCK^...either of you guys know?

Dougo, I hear ya. I was just expressing that in my view it would be a more well rounded combo with the .308.

Ya think? Wouldn't it suck with the rifle being so short? I mean, I know they make one in .44 Mag, but damn, a .308 would dislocate my shoulder again. I think...

Can't speak for Austin, but they're building one here in Harker Heights...looking foward to it. Should be open in another month or so...

What would make the .410 very interesting as a general purpose pack/survival gun is if .45 Long Colt will also shoot through it seeing as they have the same bore.

It should work just fine, as there are many other guns that are capable of this, but I'd try to find some info to make sure before I tried it.

I think it would be ideal. This isn't the kind of weapon one takes to the gravel pit and burns through a hundred rounds with. In .308, shooting factory loads or light hand loads it would be quite manageable. In something like .375 H&H it would probably prove unpleasant. Recoil aside, the .308 is a more versatile round than the .243.

That's outside of Hood, right?

Yeah, it's just on the board of Killeen...both are merging together, but it's growing like crazy here; another reason I want to move to a more remote location:thumbup:

I think .243 would be okay for most situations in the lower 48. I thought about the .44 MAG option, but with 20ga slugs, you still have a pretty potent close range thumper. I would think the 20ga would kick more than the .308...I do agree, if they made it with .308, I'd buy one for myself. As is, I still may get that set for my son's next B-day.

Yea...I am gonna hold out for now. I am beginning work at Academy on 5 Sept, so I will use my discount if they have a comparable rifle. Or..I may just hoof it up to Harker one day. Not too terrible of a drive if the price is right.
