The rubber band test

Must be all them feral hog and big game ribcages you been sawing through! LOL! I remember you talking about that knife in another thread. I thought it was shavin sharp and didn't suck.

Thats what I got if for but haven't had a chance to use it yet. In fact, it hasn't left my desk here, thats why I was surprised it didn't turn a rubber band into a bunch of worms.

And it does shave but like a very sharp ax.

Damn, don't sit and stew over past threads, homeboy, where you yourself said we should 'agree to disagree.' Get a life, go out and baton something.

Lol - will do! I'll even post pics!

Apparently so. And whats your technique master blades smith?

Get a mouse pad or an old phone book. Put a piece of sandpaper on it. Strop the blade on it. Replace the sandpaper with a finer grit. Keep going until you get a razor sharp edge. It shouldn't take long. Most definitely not 3 nights of grinding away. Just remember to hold a consistent angle. The mouse pad will give a little under the sandpaper as you strop. That's what gives you the convex edge. It's simple, quick, and works consistently.

Well what happens is that when you stretch it out and then let it go, instead of all coming back in a straight line the rubber kind of "bunches up" on itself and forces waves. So because it starts bunching and making waves, the peaks of the waves catch the blade edge as the rest of the rubber band travels by it. Then if the momentum and edge-sharpness is sufficient it cuts off a piece or carves a little bit of it as it passes by. Angling it probably helps to catch more of the rubber band on the blade as it passes.

This kind of shows what I mean... See how it looks like a big wavy strip of bacon once it gets toward the thumb? All the little "pieces" that get cut off are the peaks of the waves being shaved off as their momentum and the kinetic energy of the rubber band contract pull them by it.

I wonder what would happen if someone added a 1/4 to 1/2 turn to the rubber band when pulling it

Ah, yeah, makes sense. :P

I see a new youtube trend. It would be nice to have a change from slicing paper and beating knives through sticks with other sticks.

Entertainment for the knife lover! I wonder how well a properly tuned 1311 would fare in this test?

I hate to raise a thread from the dead, but I finally got edges sharp enough to get the rubber band test to work right. A properly done rubber band test is hilarious to watch, because the rubber band just plainly explodes. I would not suggest doing it inside. I also found that thinner rubber bands work better. Something like a broccoli band won't work very well, but one of those nearly square rubber bands should be great.

Instructions unclear, slingshotted the knife into my neck.

Favorite post of the day :D
Piece of helpful advice: Don't try this at work...A bag of rubber bands later I'm ordering more because now the office has none...but my knives are sharp!!
