I commented in another thread, recently, about carrying more than one means of firestarting. Well, later that same day I went to show somebody my magnesium/ferro stick, which hangs on my keys on my belt. Surprise, the ferro part is gone. No biggie,if it had been a situation ,I could've used my minibic. Two days later, I go to actually use the mini bic to heat some plastic and it ain't working. I should mention I don't use the bic for anything. Again if it had been a situation I still had my Boy Scout hot spark on my SAK Explorer. If I had been outside ,my parka pockets have a big firesteel and a handful of fatwood. At least it was there last time I looked, who knows, with the way the gremlins are lining up.

Consider carrying a torch wherever you go. :D

I am with you finder, I also plan to carry some tinder with me next time I go out, drier lint and fat wood slivers, possibly even some lighter fluid in a visine bottle.
Redundancy is a good thing.

You are right! Murphy's law always applies even in surburbia.

Many people think a bic and a pack of matches is all you need. I think that is not the best choice. I have had similar issues like you have explained. A ferro rod never fails.
