The S.O.L survival kit.

Yeah - I thought so too. Had a good button compass, and a quality whistle, as well as a good Mirror (signal with the hole), as well as a cool dry bag. I thought it looked decent for the price.

I like that the bag can be used for a water carrier. Maybe slide some water treatment tabs in the bag. I once read an article(in Backwoodsman I think) where the author built a kit around a stainless pot with a locking lid. Held all his gear(inside a ziplock bag for when the pot was in use) AND could be used for cooking, digging, water purifying, and even as a signal by banging on it :) Made sense then and still does.

Hmmm... INteresteing review. He, like me, liked what I saw - and thought what I mentioned above was top notch - but I didn't fully check it out.

Good save Jim.

Jeff Randall wrote a review of the SOL kit in SWAT Magazine, July 08 issue I believe.

If someone spent $25 for that kit, they got too much money.

(personal opinion only)

how do you think that? it really is a good basic kit, the bag is waterproof, holds about a half liter of water, signal mirror is top notch, the whistle is super loud, I replaced the compass with the suunto clipper, but the compass is comes with would get you back to civilization, its got 3 or 5 pieces of quick tinder, the emergency blanket that has useful tips printed on it in various languages, a small roll of duct tape, nato matches(granted not the best form of fire starting, but they work) so for 25$ they are a really good deal for a start of a survival kit, I added a knife, water purification tabs, some other meds, replaced the matches with a firesteel, replaced the fishing kit with more tinder. so I guess I'm just curious what you meant by that comment, because it is a good kit.

so what is it you use? because I have not found a better store bought kit, and building one from scrap is SUPER expensive

i have one. it's not bad, not great. i got it on discount, wouldn't pay full price for it. get the ritter if you want a good pre-made kit.

best to build your own. the bag is very grippy and hard to get things in or out of. the stuff inside's fine, except the matches and fishing kit. no big deal, those should be swapped out for a bic and a spool of twine.

go to walmart and get the belt pouch medical kits for $5. there's room to add plenty of gear. i combined it with the contents of the SOL, plus some other items.

I have considered buying one and cannablizing its contents for other kits like texas tony does.
Alot of the contents would be expensive to get retail.

hmmm... I don't know, let's see, a roll of duct tape is 5 or 6 for the cheap stuff and about 13 for the good

3.95 for a similar whistle
http://survival.instantestore.net/pd_survival_kit_whistle.cfm
6.50 for the blanket, or about 4 for a cheaper one
http://www.rei.com/product/669629
11 for a fire steel
http://www.rei.com/product/737335
or4.15 for the storm matches
http://www.rei.com/product/617046
10 for a small enough compass,
http://www.rei.com/product/757629
we wont put a price on tinder because you can scrounge up enough of that around most any house or just step into a salon and ask for some cotton balls
9 for the mirror
http://www.rei.com/product/744441
and then theres the fishing line and hooks, wieghts, and the safety pins, now assuming that someone is starting from scratch, now with the top notch stuff with no case it comes to 54$ and 36 for the cheaper stuff IE cheap duck tape, the matches instead of the firesteel, the smaller of the 2 blankets, then you have the fishing kit and a case, so from that I think it's a pretty darn good kit, if you can put together a kit that is as good for cheaper, from scratch, please tell me how, if somebody is looking at this kit as a start from scratch, it is a good place to start, it is the base of my kit. and I had to start from scratch.
edited to add I just found this-so knock off 5 bucks from the cheapo side and knock off 5 from the SOL
