The Sage 5 Might Be the Perfect Spyderco...

I just got mine yesterday. I was very enthusiastic about it at first but I think I may send it back and wait for the pm3. I don't know what it is about it, it's a great quality knife but it just doesn't ask me to keep it, if that makes any sense. When I first got my pm2 there was no question I was keeping it, this just doesn't feel the same.

I put in my pre-order for the PM3 last week lol.

Just wondering - in the pictures, which is the Sage 5 and which is the Sage 3? Or am I supposed to have both of them in front of me while reading the review? Thanks.

Just received my Spyderco Sage 5 and have never done a review but this really might be the perfect Spyderco. I love the compression lock but the Pm2 is a little big in some instances. I also have a Sage 3 and this is much smaller (which I thought they were all the same size). It may not appear so in pictures but the knife is not near as tall and much more comparable in size to the Native 5. Lock up is rock solid with no play, very smooth and this has perfect centering. Here are some comparisons with my Sage 3. It's also much grippier than the Sage 3.

This will go into the pocket immediately and will replace my Sage 3 as my go to Spyderco. For $131 I suggest picking one up.

Why is the Sage 5 handle "much grippier" than the Sage 3? And if it is, why aren't all Sypderco CF knives made like the Sage 5? I was under the impression that "grippier" was a good feature for pocket knives?

I'd be all over the Sage 5 if they used a better steel on the series. S30V isn't a bad steel, I just strongly dislike it. Terrible steel for my preferences. Absolutely no retention of the razor edge, only retention of the working edge, and a bit too high of a tendency to chip (no to mention the nightmare it has been for me to sharpen in the past).

Now that I have time I'd like to revive this thread and point your attention to something nobody seems to talk about anywhere.
The jimping on the Sage series. We are at a version 5 now and this hasn't been addressed at all and perhaps it's a design feature, but in my opinion it's a flaw and I will elaborate.

Basically the jimping here is too round and your finger just slides over it. The choil area jimping is just laughable you can see it from the pictures of other posters.

The handle jimping is round again and the way it is recessed into the handle makes it useless and is there just for looks.
Pick up a PM2 and compare yourself to know what I mean.

This part of the knife offers more friction if you put your thumb over it and try to slide it forward than the jimping up top. :thumbdn:
(nice inside chamfering by the way of the scales)

You have great jimping on other spyderco's that really gives you satisfaction at those finger tips.
Perhaps it's too late with sage but please keep this in mind and don't slack on your jimping in the future.
This is one part that gives the Spyderco it's feel of greatness in the hand.

Chef Ramsay is not impressed... Shame

I like my Sage knives, but I've always felt like they were big in the pocket and then small in the hand (at least blade-wise). They take up as much pocket space as much, much larger knives. For example, my CKF Ratata and Sage 2 are about the same size closed, but the Ratata has almost an inch longer sharpened blade length (2.625" for the Sage 2 vs 3.5" for the Ratata). The idea of a Sage with a compression lock isn't very compelling to me. I think I've probably bought my last Sage variation at this point.
