We had two great Pilots and they left us. We had a great transition team the first year and that reached it's natural conclusion. Now we have a team of mods for today and the future.

But we have our forum. That is what is truly here. The mods, the rules; these are not as important as us and our forum.

Over and over again I said 'our forum'. I should have listened to myself. Because I had a natural connection with HI and Yangdu, writing and the forum, it's also natural for me to want to help, to feel the responsibility if the forum is happy, if the forum is divisive.

I've been beating my head against the wall, blaming myself for not being Bill Martino, for not being Rusty. I was failing. I couldn't please everyone, the forum is percieved to be 'not as good' as it was.

Two Wise Guys spoke to me. It's good to call them Wise Guys. If you call them wise men, they've that onus upon them to be virtuoius, strong true and brave. But they really are just men, a couple of flawed, at times inaccurate or intemperant, men. They are happy. Got that? I forgot. And when Steve Ferguson saw that I had, he said, paraphrased,

You worry too much. You think too much. Go outside. Get some exercise. This place is not your fault, for God Sakes. It's our forum.

I pussyfooted around, I told the other Wise Guy I didn't want to hurt any one's feelings. I thought if someone had a problem, I should say: What's the problem? Instead of smoothing things over.

"Dont let people quench the Light," the Wise Guy said. He's a joker, wears a Hawiian shirt in middle America. Rob's growing wiser and I'm lucky to maintain level.

So, I'm going to be happy.
This is our forum.
If anyone has a problem, thinks things have changed for the worse in some areas, speak up, do something about it. Don't stuff it inside.

Our forum. And if it doesn't work the way we'd like it to, we can figure something else to try. This is still the best forum I know. It'll go up and down.
I'm not going to be a sap about it. We can't do that to ourselves, because it's never about one or two people, it about everyone.

The wise men are right. Fuggitaboutit. You're doing fine. As I said to you before. Water off a duck.

Munk,

Since I've only been around here since early December, I can't make any comments about what the forum was like two years ago. I can say that this is definitely one of the nicest, most respectful forums that I've been part of. I wouldn't sweat it. Keep up the good work.

Mark

The forum is a school of fish, darting here and there topically, investigating informational bits of interest to all or some.

Mods are fish within. The school moves as a body.

__________

What the Zen parable means:

munk, don't sweat it. The forum changes constantly. Nobody can mess it up. Relax. Leaders change within a school of fish but the school moves on.

hey...no one said I had to be a leader...you said I would just have more stuff to sweep up!

I wanna raise...

Its hard sometime to plumb the depths when we are not privy to all the undercurrents . Munk I am sure things go on behind the scenes as it is perhaps best for some things to be handled with at least some discretion .

I too find that we have a great buncha guys here and well behaved to boot . This is of course in comparison to most other forums I am on Where trolling can become rampant and pettiness abounds . I have tried to develop a slighgtly thicker skin on-line . Things get said on-line that would rarely be said face to face . I think its a fact of life in on-line decorum that the "pen is mightier than the sword" simply because we are not at arms length to each other . I try to read my posts over more before commiting them to print so as to give myself more time to think about what I truly mean and what it may mean to others .

Didn't you get just alittle suspicous when they gave that End Loader and called it a Dust Pan?

I consider myself an outsider in here, I don't own any HI, but I am working on that as we speak. Great respect for the Mods in here, as well as the rest of the BF community. From my minimal participation in here, I think that Munk and others (Mr Nasty) are doing a great job. This and the Makers area are two sections where I try not to make too much of a fool of myself. If I have inadvertently offended anyone in here, my apologies. Still getting a feel for the Cantina.

Don't sweat it, Munk. Things are fine here. I mean, for those that say "it's not as good as it was", well i think that's a bit of a skewed look on things. Think about it, Uncle Bill was sick the entire time I have been here, and I joined in '02. Rusty had to run the ship with extra help from the old hands for the most part.
I can't see how there was ever a "glorious golden era" of the Cantina after the spring of '02.
I think we have done pretty damn well for ourselves. We lost both of our leaders at the same time, we had to deal with that grief, we had trolling problems, then we had a very kind and appreciated (but still different to what we were used to) offer by Spark to split our forum. Things change, and i think we have done a good job.
This place will keep plugging along. Mods will come and go, to be sure. But as long as there are good men with good hearts populating this place, then the Cantina will live on for a good long while.

Jake

Wise Words, Munk. Let's be up and at it to keep our Forum the very best we can.

Some of you may not know Yangdu works sometimes 16 hours a day to get the job done that used to take both her and Uncle Bill. She's up and at them. I'm just at.

Any one has a problem should say something. Don't hold it inside.

A *thinly* veiled threat if I ever heard one...

munk - do I still Paypal you $50 to ban these guys?

It's not worth money.
Get his gizzard.
We need the gizzard.
I think we can cure Zombism with them.

munk

It's getting pretty bad when they start coming forward to volunteer. Like those bump and go faked collisions on the highway to bilk the insurance of the unsuspecting motorist.
Nasty, we need a volunteer for the gizzard zombie reclamation project. Promise Astrodada 20 bucks, a picture from Mexico of the woman and the dog, any opened and left-out-all-night beer from the next Eastern Khuk Konvention, and he gets to be "mod for a day" if he lives.

munk

and another thing tha bothers me...folks that don't use their turn signals.

yeah...ban them too.

Thank you, those of you kind enough to see what is actually a pretty standard, almost predictable growth threshold regarding moderatorship, and give me a 'pass'. Probably what most mods go through. "Gee, it's not only not my fault, but I'm off the pedestal and don't resent the Golden standard anymore."

If any Old Hands of HI have concerns, I hope they step foreward and exert their concerns to someone; Yangdu, Nasty, God, or this Round Table discussion.

I might consider getting disturbed all over again if the Old Hands don't speak up now, but that would be thinking too hard, worrying, projecting my own brand of anxiety into the picture. That is what we try to intercept in our relations with each other in this forum. In this forum, we do let go of the individual ego and speak for the greater good of friendship.

You just can't beat HI forum. I'd guess our collective IQ is higher than most post grad students, but of course we're dragged down to the normal range in the Bell Curve because of myself and a few other outlandish charaters here. Of all the gin joints, of all the bars and dipsy dumpers in the world, why did you guys pick this place to hang out?

munk

Also, there's bound to be someone who does not agree with my moderation of this forum. Let's not fall into the trap of picking a scapegoat for what is a collective problem, but if anyone wants to vote no on munk- say something. Anyone. Yvsa, Kismet, whoever. (no, I'm not putting words in anyone's mouth. I'm trying to let clean air through the open windows of our Cantina) I'm not going to blow a gasket about it. I might even agree with any or some of the complaints, if they exist; you'd be surprised.
