(note delivered to agent James "Sonny" Crockett, sent by officer Dan Martinez, US customs, Ft. Lauderdale airport)
"Sonny, I have some news for you. After our talk a few weeks ago, I've been personally helping out the special surveillance at the Ft. Lauderdale airport. So yesterday we got news that a suitcase containing handmade knives was to arrive on a flight from western Europe. Luggage detection was unsuccessful, but possibly due to a delay in communication. Yet, in the late afternoon Ricky, a young agentof my team, spotted a man in his mid 40's in the arrivals area, wearing an uncommon velvet suit (temp was around 90°) and standing in front of the passengers' arrival door for more than an hour. As my agent was keeping an eye on him, the man apparently received some signal from a group of arriving passengers, cause he suddenly turned around and walked out of the airport hall, all alone. As he turned around, his eyes crossed my agents watching him; he grinned slightly, and went on walking towards the exit doors. My agent reached him and took him in for a talk. The man had a valid Italian passport and no criminal record whatsoever. When Ricky asked him what he was doing there, he said he was waiting for someone who didn't show up, and that he was going back to his hotel by the beach. Curiously, in a "casual" search on his jacket while he was being checked, Ricky found a piece of paper with the address of a regular hotel in Raleigh NC, and a picture that might get your attention. Please let me know if you need more details on the man; personally, I think the suitcase is already on its way to destination. Here's the picture:
Ricky tried to talked tohim for quite a while, but the guy said nothing more, and in the end we had nothing against him so he walked away. Don't know if it can help you somehow, but as he was leaving the police office, rain was pouring down: the man put on a weirdly shaped black hat, looked up at the clouds, and (we had a microphone just two feet from him) muttered the words "
abba de sero, friscu de manzanu", whatever that might mean. Regards, Dan"
