The Shame & Disgrace.

And though they're spoilt, I doubt you can name any American President's families that have equalled Military / Academic / Philanthropic achievements, as the British Royal family have had since Queen Elizabeth has been the Monarch.

Remember now, in the US the theory is that the people allow Govt the power to govern and form governments. From my govt classes, the theory is that the Royals allow govt the power to form governements and to govern.

So change your statement to ...And though they're spoilt, I doubt you can name Amercians that have equalled Military / Academic / Philanthropic achievements, as the British Royal family have had since Queen Elizabeth has been the Monarch.

I think that is a far more fair topic to talk about. Do you want me to start the list?

OK, how about: And though they're spoilt, I doubt you can name any Amercian families with the same same affluaece as the British Royal Family, that have equalled Military / Academic / Philanthropic achievements - since Queen Elizabeth has been the Monarch.

OK,

I'll bite.

The Bushes.

Two presidents.

I think that's more than any royal has managed.

I don't know the legal status of these medals in Britain, but in the States, you cannot sell a Congressional Medal of Honor, for instance. It always belongs to the recipient.

Military, Academic and Philanthropic (any of which excludes Bush Jr. ;))

ps. There might be three Bush Presidents soon :D

George Washington was the richest man in the world when he risked his neck to fight off your hoity toity royal family. How about Andrew Jackson. Pretty affluent, always fighting on the frontlines (against the brits too). How about when Davey Crocket, a congressman, not a president, and successful as any American, a legend in fact, marched off to certain death in the Alamo against the evil Santa Anna? Also think of Teddy Roosevelt.

No one is saying the Brits aren't courageous, they are. But do those royals do any real fighting? The younguns are being kept away from the danger zones is what I've read. Harry is in Iraq, but being kept in safe jobs. Their daddy is just a playboy, yea he was in the military, but mainly just to have fun, right?

Again, comparative familes in the same timeline hence since Queen Elizabeth has been the Monarch.

Prince Phillip served in WW2, Charles and Andrew are combat pilots (Andrew served in the Falklands War if memory serves correct). Harry is an elite soldier graduating from Sandhurst. The Queen's brother Lord Mountbatten (Admiral?) was murdered by the IRA.

why? What military purposes have the royals served?

George Sr was a decorated pilot in the second world war. The son might not have gone to war, but when was the last royal in the fighting?

Academic? Well, I don't know if you heard them talk, but when did the last royal come up with their own language? Besides that, argue your point. What have the royals done academically?

Politically? While I doubt you would agree. I would say that the two combined have done more to protect the West from Islamo-fascism than they are given credit for. From forcing libya to remove itself as a threat, to reducing the abilty of Iraq to wage war in the first gulf war, to giving them an opportunity for freedom in the second.

Now another.

Jimmy Carter:

public school education. Attended our Naval Academy. In fact:

He was educated in the Plains public schools, attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, N.Y., where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics, and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf

Just read that article, I have to get ready for work.

LOL and OT, in my six years at BF this is the first time somebody has used Carter's name as a positive reference to something :D

Are we really going to bite on a, 'our leaders/heros/figureheads/fill in blanks are better than yours'?

A real troll question.

Jimmy Carter is also a very advanced Furnituremaker, and a blacksmith too. Not a bad guy at all.

I haven't seen a limit on great men based upon country of origin.

We're going to need some greatness real soon. The middle east is brewing. And it is just a matter of time before another 9-11 type hit.

Thats intresting about the Congressional Medal of Honor Munk... Food for thought.

Most old Ghurkhas have al sort of rubbish dates on their army papers. They dont know how old they are. It doesnt matter in the mountains.

Offcialy in WW2 one unit put evryones birthday as the same day on thier papers. They were all 18 on that day... Thats what happens if an Officer says to a Gurkha.... "Make sure they are all 18."...

Sorry guys, I can defend my nation but not my Royals.:D

Theirs the Great & the brave & the scum in evry race.

Where else could you have such major thread drift with much feeling and still bring it back around and end on a civil note? Good stuff and well done.

As a conservative Republican who worked for half a dozen Presidents, I assure you that Mr. Carter ( a Democrat ) was a highly intelligent, sensitive, and moral individual, whose problems began when he surrounded himself with idiots like DuPont for Presidential Advisors....the rest is history. Advised by DuPont that cocaine was a "harmless, non-addictive drug" for example, Carter was led to make some pretty stupid moves by his advisors.

As for our hapless Ghurkha brother, he should get his Medal back, and wear it to the grave. Clearly the Officer gave him bad advice. Does anybody see a parallel?
