The Sheaths Set ESEE Apart

ESEE makes great knives but so do other manufacturers. For me, it is the usefulness of the sheaths that keeps me coming back to ESEE knives. I can't think of another maker that provides sheaths that are so versatile and usable right out of the box. Sadly, it seems that the sheath is an afterthought with most manufacturers.

I wrote some more thoughts here: http://jerkingthetrigger.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/esee-rat-cutlery-sheaths-are-tops/

Thanks,
Matt

I agree. The first time I got my hands on an ESEE-3 (it was an RC-3 then) I was immediately impressed by how the sheath was just as nice as the knife!

Amen. It seems like a lot of people turn their noses up at the RC/ESEE-3 sheath because it is molded plastic and they equate that with cheapness or poor quality. However, if they would give it a chance they would see that it is really VERY durable and extremely functional.

I like the molded plastic sheaths. Ive never had a kydex one like the 4 has. The only thing i dont like about the sheaths is that unless you shell out another $50 for a molle back or have a custom sheath made, you have to wear it really high up in your waist or keep it in your pack or pocket. I like belt carry. I find it the best but thats more of an opinion. It works for me. See i got my RC6 a few days ago and i have no way to wear it unless i paracord belt carry and then it sits in my waist really high or i use the molle locks and it still sits high in my waist. I find it digs in when i move around and sit down and crouch etc. Its very uncomfortable. I love the knives and i will continue to support RAT. I just wish their blades came with a belt carry option that hangs like a regular sheath straight from the factory.

I think I paid about $12 for the MOLLE back. They certainly aren\'t $50.

That is also why I bought the RC-3MIL. It comes with all of the sheath options right out of the box.

ESEE Sheathing is great & very Versatile and just using the factory sheath and all the options of carrying & mounting accessories onto the factory sheaths is Awesome...

Great article. I've always been impressed with the ESEE sheaths myself, so many different ways to configure them.

For me the extra $45-$50 for the MOLLE back is worth it. It opens up a whole new world of carry, on pack, on belt, etc. I haven't purchased an ESEE knife without a Molle Back and happy with every one.

For me, the factory sheath with the belt/boot clip has just stayed in the drawer.

Ya im happy with my MOLLE back my RC3 MIL has. It works great for belt carry. Its the perfect drop for me. I just wish all the blades came with a molle back.

THe Molle Backing for the ESEE5 & 6 are worth every penny.... The pouch is sweet...
I am hoping the factory seconds don't sale out before I can grab a set .CD ( cricket Dave) had a factory second at the campout and man they are sweet.. I like to snag the OD Green to go with my Junglas pack.

I just had a thought. I bet one of our resident kydex benders/leather workers (Shotgunner, I am talking to you) could make some kind of leather kydex hybrid belt hanger for the factory sheaths.

I emailed Shotgunner 2 days ago. He didnt reply :(
Or maybe it was the mrs i emailed. Ill shoot them another one soon. I might attempt to make a backing out of thick nylon and make some holes and screw the molded plastic sheath of my RC6 into that. Just need to find some now. Could be a fun little project.

The ESEE knives really are a system - to work as conceived you need the sheath. That's truly what sets them apart from most similar knives out there (well that, the magnificent heat treat, warantee, etc.). I love my RC-3's sheath. Not a big fan of kydex, but the RC-3's molded plastic sheath is just perfect for me, especially with the MOLLE back. I feel that I am not creative enough to find all the best ways to mount this thing.

That's one thing that's always angered me about the other knife makers, their sheaths. They find the cheapest piece of crap that they can find that has absolutly no functionality at all and toss the knife into it. You know no one had ever tested out the sheath and knife as a system in the field before they put it up for sale, because if any of them had they'd instantly know that their sheaths have no use what so ever. When you buy a ESEE not only do you get a great knife, you get a great sheath that works and has a bunch of different mounting options.

Wintermute, a "system" is a great way to describe the sheaths.

333rm, I have also had enough with manufacturers that do not provide suitable sheaths, especially now that we have choices like ESEE Knives.

I have a question about the RC6. Why does it come with a molded plastic sheath instead of the nice kydex sheath like the rc4, rc5, and the junglas?.
I can understand them using molded plastic sheathing for the izula and rc3, but for the 6?.
That just puzzles me.

I concur. The RC 4 canvas I just got has a very nice fitting kydex sheath. The system allows me to carry just about every way. I do want to try to make something to try it horizontal though.
