So, earlier this week (Saturday to be exact) I posted a new thread on my favorite Forum. (That would be here) about my favorite Chris Reeve Knife. The Umnumzaan... As I stated in that thread "So as you all know by now I am somewhat obsessed with the Umnumzaan.. No really!!" I had also mentioned that I was expecting the arrival of a new knife for my small but growing Unmunzaan Collection. Well here it is!!:D

But I also want to update some information on the changes that have taken place to the Umnumzaan since it was first introduced as a Prototype at BLADE 2008. So this again will be a very long and somewhat boring thread. But please take the time to read through it and if you can comment on the information posted here and especially if you can add to it I would be very appreciative!!
Many if not most of the members here on the forum already know the basics about the Umnumzaan. There is even a Umnumzaan page on Wikipedia!! But it at least to me does not appear that anyone has tried to do an in-depth examination of all the variations of the Zaan.. That is of course very understandable, after all who would bother to take the time and effort to do so. This is my attempt at it.
As I have stated in some of my other boring threads here on the Chris Reeve Forum before I ever discovered "This Thing of Ours" Chris Reeve Knives I collected World War II firearms specifically the M1 Carbine and Garand. So as I struggled to come up with some coherent way to describe the different variations of the Umnumzaan a little light went off in my head.!! M1 Carbine Collectors refer to original Carbines by Type.. very early versions are of course Type 1's and then in a similar fashion as with the Umnumzaan as changes were made to the Carbine in much the same manner and for the same basic reasons ie. to make the Carbine more user friendly and or improve the manufacturing process and yes to make it more economical to produce, changes were made.
So I decided to use the same method to try to describe the various differences in the Umnumzaan as it has evolved over the last five and a half years. (2008-2014).
This is what I have come up with so far. I will try to update these "changes" as more information comes to light thrugh information that I gather and that which I hope will be provided here by other members who have a love and respect for this fantastic knife from CRK. If you have stayed with me this long you have my many thanks.
Below I have added some links that may or may not be of interest.
All the best, Dave

I have been struggling to come up with a breakdown for the different varieties (for a lack of a better word) of Umnumzaan. I look at them as "changes" or if you prefer "improvements" to the original production Umnumzaan released in September of 2008. And then also break them down into the three different models, Orignal Design, Orignal Design with Tanto Blade (TNK Exclusives) and the Wilson Tactical Star-Tac.
The Original Design:
Type 1. Original Design Umnumzaan (09-2008 to 12-2009)

Type 2. Original Design Umnumzaan with "new" hex screw design for the rear spacer on the lock side. (01-2010)

Type 3. Original Design Umnumzaan with extended (wider) lock-bar for easier deployment and Idaho Made Stamp (10-2010)

Type 4. Original Design Umnumzaan same as #3 with addition of the no logo OTS (Over Travel Stop) and s35v steel late 2011.

Type 5. Original Design Umnumzaan same as #4 with addition of the OTS w/CRK logo and new style gimping. mid 2012.

Type 6. Original Design Umnumzaan with all "New Features" (current production) first released Summer 2012.

Original Design sub-category TNK TANTO:
The TNK exclusive Tanto versoin of the Umnumzaan can be had with every change listed above and to add more pain to the obsessive collector with three different lanyard's which are listed on the box !!! Although I believe the first version released in mid to late 2009 only came with a black lanyard with silver bead.

Wilson Tactical (Combat) collaboration with Chris Reeve Star-Tac. This version of the Umnumzaan was first manufactured in March of 2010 and offered for sale in May of the same year.
So they can be found with every change listed above with the exception of the solid rivet type fastener on the lock-bar side found on the early versions of the Original Design. (Type 1)

I must add that there are other variations out there.. for one our good friend blackend has a Star-Tac from July of 2012 that came New with all early features with the exception of the gimping on the blade!! and I am sure there are others that I either don't know about or have neglected to list. If you have more information please add it to the thread!!
ATB, Dave
And again please accept my apologizes for the overlong post and all the mistakes that it may contain.

Very well written and educational post Professor Zaan Man! I had most of these halfway figured out in my head but seeing them in order like this really helps.

Congratulations on your newest addition brother.

I sure like that prototype.

Nice pickup Dave and great post. BTW your posts are anything but boring. They contain tons of information and pictures too...:D. I like pictures. Lol.

I actually look forward to seeing if you've started a new and/or picked up a new Zaan.

Take care my friend.

Tutti i migliori, Dave

Tipo 4. Originale Design Umnumzaan stesso come #3 con aggiunta del no logo OTS (sopra viaggio Stop) e s35v in acciaio fine 2011.

Tipo 5.

Originale Design sottocategoria TNK TANTO:

Great write up! I've always been able to remember the subtle changes, and about when they happened, but recently, I've given up! This is a good reference thread!

So when are you publishing a chris reeve book? Haha

Always love reading your threads.

Thank you for the kind words my friend!! I'm glad you have enjoyed reading my long boring threads!! My hope is that those with much more knowledge and experience than I will chime in and help complete what is just a small chapter in the history of CRK.. The Umnumzaan.
All the best, Dave

Thanks lemmuhj!! Most of the information on the Umnumzaan can be found right here on the Chris Reeve Forum, thanks to all the wonderful members like you who have contributed over the years!! Thanks again!!
All the best, Dave

And as others have said " I enjoy your long boreing posts" I always learn something and most always go and grab a knife and give it a look and go "wow never noticed that". You should truly try to get this as a sticky. Thanks agin and off to look at my Zaan.

Great post Dave!
Mods, please make this a sticky, there's a ton of useful info that shouldn't be lost to the depths of the forum that will probably never be duplicated.

Dave that was extremely thoughtful of you to translate that entire post in Italian. Being Italian myself I found myself reading it all over again, however I did lose quite a bit in the translation. It seems easier for me to read it than to speak it. And I don't do either one very well...:( My folks will be disappointed when I tell them I got to read a very cool knife post in Italian and couldn't respond... Then they'll say " We told you to go to Italy, learn Italian and marry a nice Italian girl"

I did neither one...

Anyways Bravo Dave

Thanks Rich!! I'm glad you enjoyed the thread!! I don't know if it comes even close to being sticky material but I appreciate the thought!!
All the best my friend!!

Thank you very much for the kind words Andre!! I assure you it took little effort on my part (simple cut and paste in a program) but felt it would be helpful to our good friend Alessio. As we all know from his many posts and contributions to the Chris Reeve forum he is a huge fan of "This Thing of Ours" Chris Reeve Knives and has become a true friend of mine thanks to BladeForums. As have you and countless others!!
Prego, mio amico!!
Migliori auguri,Davide
