The original TNK tanto zaan had a plain black lanyard with no bead if it matters. It's still on the one I have with a date of 5/21/2009.

Thanks unwise!! I really appreciate the information! It would be great to see some pictures of your Tanto! !

Just found this great fountain of knowledge :) One are I'm interested in is when did the detent become stronger? I have a very first series and a later model from 2012. There is a significant difference in detent strength on my new Zaan. Was this done due to people requesting a change or something that Chris thought was best for the design?

Hello Mike,
I am surprised that you did not have any mention of the CRK "pierced edge Umnumzaan? I didn't even know that it existed until I saw one for sale about 5-6 months ago. Apparently they were practicing grinds on the Umnum and ended up with a bunch that Chris deemed "messed up" so they put slight platinum tips on them and sold them all to TNK. It is legit as it says it on the birthcard and I almost bought the one that I saw for sale when it was up. It has a very long, extended swedge and then a small platinum tip. Put out a couple feelers, I know you will track one down. Best of luck, and take care.

Type 3. Original Design Umnumzaan with extended (wider) lock-bar for easier deployment and Idaho Made Stamp (10-2010)

Type 4. Original Design Umnumzaan same as #3 with addition of the no logo OTS (Over Travel Stop) and s35v steel late 2011.

As a minor additional data point, there are Type 3 knives with S35VN blades (which will surprise no one). ;) I have a pair of them.

.... "pierced edge Umnumzaan? ......

What is this creature you speak of? This is the first I've ever heard of a "platinum tip Umnumzaan". This account seems oddly similar to the "Dynamic Tip" tanto Umnumzaan story, but with platinum? I'd sure like to hear more about these rare beasties. Maybe Neil with jump in with more info.

I look forward to this official CRK platinum tipped Umnumzaan being something more than a hoax. Can you post us a link brendtech?

Back on topic.....

I've been on the quiet hunt for one of these for a while now. While not quite in the "grail knife" category, I sure wanted one in my collection. I'm glad I made a last sweep of the exchange before turning in Saturday night. Thanks skwurll!
