The SJTAC is under rated. Why so little love?

Greetings all,

I know everbody love, love, loves the straight handled Boss Jacks/Satin Jacks. But I just got my hands on two Satin Jack Tacs and they seem like heckava nice knives, the HOG/LE version in particular. It may not have all the lopper/chopper power of the bigger Busse/kin, but for a general purpose/camp knife, it seems pretty capable. Some seem to think it's more of a 'fighter' style, and while it could probably be pressed into such in dire circumstances (as could just about anything sharp & pointy), it sure seems like it would make a nice trail/camp companion. So why so little love for this model? Is it just the TAC handle, or because the straight hand versions are out there?

Just my $.02 worth, YMMV...but tell me that HOG/LE isn't a shwanky piece of INFI.

We all got spoiled by the saber/solid pin version. ;)

And somewhere I have a user HOGSJTACLE too...they ARE pretty schweet. :) Congrats to you on your scores!!

I haven't handled one, but I am a real big fan of the way they look and the specs. An SJTAC is on my long list of knives to buy for sure. I'm glad you like yours! These pictures make me want one even more.

When I first held a Satin Jack Tac prototype at Blade, I predicted on this forum that it would be the most popular Busse ever. However, I have never used any of mine. It seems that there is always something more suitable at hand. If a small knife is needed, there is always something more suitable, in thinner stock. If a chopper is needed, it is not really a chopper. And there are better all-round Busses. My Combat Grade SJTac is one of the very few Busses I have sold. All that being said, the local gun show clerk/gunsmith who bought it has used it hard and is very pleased with it, but it is the only Busse he has, so there you go.

For one thing, this is a knife that just begs to be made in a thinner blade.

The SJTAC was my first INFI and I loved it. I am a fan of the TAC handles too, especially on the BA, but my BOSS Jack just covers what I want better by size, shape and feel.

What does that mean?

My brother has a comp finish SJTAC, and he loves it. I've handled it and was quite impressed also. I think what happens is, there are a few Busse knives which are absolute break-out favorites loved by all. Instant classics (such as the boss jack), and then the rest of the models have their die hard followers and users, but don't get as much publicity. Especially if the model has a lot of other similar looking (size, spec, handle) models around it, which I think the SJTAC does.

I've always liked them and when I see them at a show I always have to fondle one. But I've never gotten one because I'd never use it since the NMSFNO is failry close to it. Well, let me rephrase that, I would have picked up one but dericdesmond nabbed the one I was going to get about 30 seconds before I got to the table ;)

They are a sweet blade that would be a great camp knife or a good thrower.

I was never really a fan of the TAC handle but the SJTAC is superior to the BATAC IMO. I do love the choiless Tank Buster with mags though. :)

:D

this isnt mine (proxied it for a guy) but I show it off every chance I get as its one of the prettiest busses I have ever seen.

For me they took up too much space for edc and were just to large for what I wanted. I'm not a huge fan of the 6-8" range, I tend towards small/big knife combo's, and the boss jack just isn't as capable a chopper as the NMSFNO. The tac handles have to tall of a palm and finger swell, creating a tennis ball effect like fusion handles with mags do for me. I carried two of them for a while and the BOSS Jack is just so much more streamline and every bit as capable.

I wouldn't say it's underrated, it's just one step below the more popular models that are almost exactly the same function, but with a standout quality. perhaps "Under talked about".

i like mine, but don't really find much of a use for it (would be great as a fighter, for all the knife fights i get into....)
for size/weight/performance, it seems to be right at the line of too large to carry but too small to do a wide enough variety of tasks. also the choil on it is kinda huge compared to the overall size of the knife

Very true... By far one of my favorite!

I also have an NMSFNOLE and have often found myself unsheathing it and lovingly gazing at the blade while standing alone... in the silent retreat of my bedroom closet... while wearing nothing but underwear, and dreaming of TEOTWAWKI scenarios where simply having this knife would mean the difference between life and death...

:numbness:

I prefer the convex blade profile on the SJTACLE to the solid pin saber grind SJTAC for some reason.

As for usability sometimes I want a SJTAC with a choil and sometimes I want a choiless BJ.

Glad to see you like the LE :)
