Have any of you noticed a smell on your RATs?
Not a bad one, kind of like Hoppes #9 or more like a cross between Hoppes and crayon.
I like it.

We discussed this a while back, I can't remember what the smell is. Tuf Glide maybe? Anyway, it wears off whenever you start using your oil of choice. I just use Rem Oil spray on mine because I've got it around for guns.

Got it.
May be close to the same stuff Strider uses, smells a little like it.

I think it's Tuf-Glide. Been a while since I've got a new RAT though, maybe my scent-memory's a bit rusty.

My RC-3MIL smells - actually it is the Micarta that smells, not the blade or some oil. The scent is pretty strong when it's new, but after some using and cleaning, it decreases pretty much. I still can smell it a little when I try hard, with my nose next to the handle.

I'd Agree, but I've got a couple with g10 handles that have the smell. My RTAKII with micarta lacks that smell. The micarta probably factors in to some of the new smell, but I'm betting it's mostly the tuf glide

My mom used to always think I was weird because I smelled everything, now I know I have found kindred spirits. Smells bring back a lot of memories for me I think. LOL just a funny observation everyone just sitting around sniffing their RATs like a bunch of junkies. "One more hit man please that's all I need and I'll be good." My Izulas did have the crayon scent to them, and I know micarta has a certain scent to it, I think it's from being shaped and formed on grinders and sanders, it's addicting.

I hear it's the new gateway drug!

Same here, love my olfactory senses. My mum used to get offended when I smelled her food, maybe she thought I thought it was poisoned or something.;) I dig the oxidation of carbon steels. Doesn't work too well with RATs because they're mostly powdercoated. But for example, I get my Case CV Sodbuster Jr, cut up an apple, then take a whiff of the blade. A sort of burning metallic smell, love that stuff. And you get a patina to boot.

thats an old grease monkey joke...rarely met a mechanic that couldnt distinguish between brands of grease from taste...

oh and then theres the one about why mechanics are so mellow
something to do with the lithium in some greases

and yeah ive licked my knives before....
just saying...
today the izula tastes like garlic-breakfast prep

The sense of smell is most closely related to memory.

I've heard this mentioned over and over and I've never actually noticed the smell of the RAT.
