The So Gent 1000th Post Bushcrafter & RLO GAW

On a serious note I want to nominate old Florida Cliff. He’s a good friend of RLO RLO and I had the pleasure to get to know and spend some time talking with him at Trackrock. I know he was well liked in our group and just a great down to earth person that would give you the shirt off of his back. He’d love and cherish his first Fiddleback.

When Bill gets serious, you better listen... Actually, that's a great nomination.

As such, I second the nomination from the Gentleman from Missouri.

Hey all, there are some great nominations here and deserving folks for this package. Keep em' coming and I'll let this go through this Thursday 12/12 and announce the winner on Fiddleback Friday.

I wanted to pop back in and nominate my favorite scout leader. Jerry Harrod.

30 years ago, he dedicated him self to taking a group of us young boys, and guiding us through to adulthood.

Hiking, camping, fishing, and canoeing.

He took us on two 70 mile canoe trips, and many other adventures.

He taught a generation of local youth about the great outdoors.

Helped many of us become Eagle Scouts (my self and older brother included). He is a real outdoorsman. He could hunt with a sling shot, or a rock! Water evaporation traps. Snares, orienteering, first aid, building fires and camping rough with no tents. Survival.

He taught me many things about bush craft, before I had ever heard the term!!!

We still chat and discuss our old adventures. More than a few near death experiences!!!

No online pics of him. No Facebook. All my pics are old film, and likely buried somewhere st my moms!

He helped inspire me to volunteer as a scout leader for many years my self. Teaching kids many of the same lessons he taught me.

Tough old coot. He once lost the tip of a finger while making walking sticks for us. We showed up, and his wife told us he would be home in a minute. We looked for the tip of his finger.....the neighbors cat ate it!! Little cat pae prints in the blood.

He stayed and made walking staffs with us for a few hours with his pointer finger missing the tip!

I nominate my oldest son, William. He will be turning 18 in January, and I was planning to purchase his first high-end fixed blade outdoor knife for him to celebrate the occasion.

A bit about the young man:

Eagle Scout (earning camping, wilderness survival, emergency preparedness, fishing, rock climbing, and many other merit badges along the way)
Honor Roll Student every semester of high school
Recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award https://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/about

As a father, I've made every attempt to foster in him a love of the outdoors that my father was able to instill in me, and I believe it has been successful. William enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, etc. When he is not playing soccer, spending time outdoors, or engaged in his studies, he seeks opportunities to volunteer to better the community and his fellow man.

As a "pay it forward" twist on the generous knife donation offer, I've budgeted $200 for the purchase of a knife for him (a fairly modest sum for a high quality knife...but I have 3 teenagers in private high school with William off to college next year), and I will donate the $200 to a great charity I recently learned about - The Joshua Chamberlain Society - https://www.chamberlainsociety.org/ which supports fallen and wounded heroes for life. I encourage everyone who reads this to check out the JCS and consider supporting the organization.

A pic of Will taken after winning the Boy Scout axe throwing competition during the summer camp out in Gunnison, CO this past summer:

It was a tough decision and I've probably read through each of these posts 4-5 times, but after much consideration, young William will be the recipient of this knife and sheath set. B brewster2012 you seem to have a great young man there and hopefully this gift will be a reminder to him to stay on his current path and someday become a great man where he can in turn pass on knowledge and kindness to those in need. Many may not know, but Andy was also an Eagle Scout and I'm sure he would appreciate another ES having one of his tools for their labors. I have to say, I may have done you an injustice, because now you'll be obligated to get at least 2 more Fiddlebacks for the other teens once they see their older brother's. You seem to be doing all the right things, so just keep on doing what you already are. Thanks again for everyone who took the time to participate and read through this thread. It's good to hear stories of goodness, perseverance, and honor when most of what we are inundated with on a daily basis is negative.

Cheers,

Justen

Justen,

I can't put into words how much I appreciate your generosity! William is going to love it, I'm sure. I will also make sure I read your kind words of wisdom when I present the knife to him (in addition to posting a pic of the exchange of course). The donation I make to the Joshua Chamberlain Society will be in your honor!

Regards,
Bruce

William turned 18 on Sunday. My younger son, Dylan, Will, and I were able to spend the weekend camping and hunting on a friend's property north of Houston. It was great to get out of the city and spend time outdoors with the young men. I presented the knife to Will with an explanation of the GAW, my nomination of him and why, a little background on Fiddleback Forge, Andy being an Eagle Scout, etc. William was very happy to receive such a finely crafted tool. His first response was, "that's a beautiful knife and a great looking sheath too". More pics to follow of the knife in use, but here is the presentation.

Obligatory campfire photo, cool spider-web (probably not a fiddleback), and the rising sun illuminating the woods during Sunday morning's hunt.
