The Spyderco Manix 2 might be the most perfect edc ever...

^^^^^ Awesome thread! I purchased a Manix (my one and only) about 4 years ago, & never really gave it a chance. After reading through half of this thread, I may try and find a user & give this one another try. Thanks, Heartland_edc!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed! It really is an awesome knife

Please elaborate on why you don't get along with the PM2 lock. I don't own one but want to know more.

I have somewhat thick fingers, and when I would attempt to close the knife one handed, it slipped and hit the ground a couple of times. I could have definitely tried to get used to closing it with two hands, but I just got frustrated. The lock functions perfectly fine, and I'm sure it's very strong, but in the end it bothered me too much. It's not a very fair reason to dislike the PM2, but that's essentially what happened.

Not the perfect EDC for my office, but a damn near perfect knife... I love me some blue Manix:

Never handled one but I have to agree with those who state that the cutting edge to overall size (or handle length, whichever you preffer) is not the best out there. If I carry something big in my pocket, I expect it to have a big blade as well. Otherwise, unless I had enormous paws and I needed such a huge handle, I would choose a smaller knife. I have an 8 glove size, so I have medium/small hands.

Why did you not like Paramilitary lock? What that because of wiggle or something else?

I got a Matriarch 2, basically an Endura. Although I like the FRN handle, the open blade vertical play when pressed hard bothers me. Is that normal for Spyderco backlocks? What about CS Tri-Ad Lock? Or should I stick to a liner lock or Axis?

If it doesn't carry tip down, it's not in the running. Perfect EDC's carry tip down. :0)
REALLY????? I recall when nearly all Spydies were only tip up carry..... I reckon I shouldn't a been carrying those:D

The PM2 did have some slight wiggle, but that was the sacrifice I made to allow it to deploy smoothly. Really, the lock bothered me because I dropped it a couple times while attempting to close it one-handed. Not the best reason to dislike a knife, but that's just my personal experience with it. I've heard that other people absolutely LOVE the PM2, and it probably fits their hands better or something. I know I've heard a few reports of some wiggle, and other reports of it being absolutely rock solid, so I guess it's just the luck of the draw. Most Spydercos I've owned have had absolutely solid lock up. I know the triad lock is supposed to be one of the strongest, if not THE strongest lock on a folder, but honestly, I have never had a liner, axis, frame, or spine lock fail.

It took me awhile after buying a PM2 to learn the best way to close it, and actually it was after I learned how to operate the Manix 2 that I found I could close the PM2 almost the same way. Now the PM2 is my easiest knife to close with the Manix 2 right behind it. Behind that are the axis locks and liner/frame locks, with lockbacks not even in the same state. With the PM2 I hold the knife between my thumb and fingertips with the edge facing down, push the lock with my fingertip, the blade swings down, I finish closing it with my thumb. Very quick and efficient.

Well I agree and I tried for a long time to buy only knives that were tip down but there were so many nice knives that I was missing out on that I had to give in. I do carry the Manix 2 a lot along with a few other of my knives that are tip down, but opening them is always a challenge. I just have to live with it. When I pull out the Manix 2 for instance I have learned to toss it up in the air and catch it in the correct position for opening. I don't have to do that with a Military or PM2. Tossing the knife up in the air is not a problem in normal use but in an unsecure location it could be a problem. I occasionally see people that wish the Military was tip up. I can imagine them pulling the knife out in one hand, moving it to the other hand, opening it with both hands, and putting it back in the first hand in order to use it. That is going to take awhile but if they aren't in a hurry I guess it is OK.

They were FRN with molded clips, and probably have to be made that way so there is a way to get to the pivot. Most early knives with clips that weren't FRN were tip down, and Spyderco still makes non-FRN knives that are tip down.

LW for me I'm curious how the Para 3 is going to stack up.

I have hands similar to yours.
I would encourage you to try one for a few days of fairly vigorous use. I think you might find it good. When blades get longer it looses some tip control. With the Manix one can grip in the choil and reach one's index finger all the way to the tip for finer work. But when really putting some energy into the handle for tough cutting it shines as well.

Good stuff.

I wouldn't!

No really, I have carried tip down - right back pocket for over 25 years and my thumb just falls into the Spydie hole upon removal and my thumb rotates the blade for a positive lock-up just as the knife clears my side. I've tried other carries and nothing comes close in ease of deployment and even while crouched down working on something, the back pocket is readily assesable (unlike the front pocket).

But that's just me. :D

I have had the super inexpensive liner locks jamb. But to be absolutely honest it was usually after I whipped it open hard rather than just open it like a rational kind of person.

But them triad locks . . .
I love the "we are doing something important and solid here" sound when a Cold Steel locks up, even my Ti Lite VI liner lock sounds like Hades shutting its doors, . . .

but

I seem to ALWAYS have to over haul the things to make them "sweet" to close rather than "OK I think I can close it ONE more time today and them I am going to have to rest up for tomorrow" kind of lock action.

Just a touch here and there with a grinder or diamond files and they are SO MUCH BETTER. I wish CS would get on top of that.

Not my favorite knife, I have one and like it. One thing I like about the locking mechanism, and others like it. If you pull it back while knife is in closed position, you can flip it out as if it was a flipper. Not that exciting or useful, just an extra feature.

I own a lightweight Manix 2, and its been a great knife. I carry it almost daily, and I've used it pretty hard. Still locks up really solid and no problems to date. It's part near a perfect EDC for me also.

This knife has probably seen more use and carry time than anything other than my dragonfly. Nothing is more comfortable in hand for me.
