The Spydie Collection 2-17-2016

Nice collection, great to see you use them too

That Superleaf is one I don't have but wish I did. Occasionally see a Superleaf on the exchange here but usually the sell is to CONUS only... :(

1: What is missing? That's so subjective, I can only offer an opinion. A Military is, to me, an iconic must have and such a great user. The Slysz Bowie is expensive, took me a while to pony up for one but I'm sure glad I did, awesome folder. And perhaps something in S90V/S110V.

2: I think your philosophy here is excellent. Myself, I'm still fighting the mindset of "He who dies with the most knives, wins". I'm hoping to grow out of that in time. I do occasionally gift a folder to someone though, love to share the joy with those I think will appreciate it.
Here's my current Spyderco collection, all get used, some a lot, some not very often.
Most used are the Manix XL, Para2 in S30V and Elmax. Military and GB are close behind.
Least used, so far, are the Orange Para 2 XHP and the Sage 4.
The Sage 4 is so beautiful in every way that I get most enjoyment just from admiring it. That's normal right??
Well, once it gets a few scratches on it I'll get over that and carry it more.

Yeah, I get the beauty fear. I always like to buy or trade for knifes on the forum that have a few scratches. NIB always makes me want to not use it, so I end up selling or trading it. I held a manix xl in a store once, and it didn't do it for me at all. Felt like I was holding a plank of wood. As for gifts, I have been called upon to advise. I always simply ask "budget, and use" and recommend like five different knives at $50 for a friend's dad.

replacement scale on 1st brad southard is a gator scale in CF.sorry, you would think i would have flipped the knifes over for photo's!!!dumb as i am.:o

That's awesome. I love the black g10 look on that knife but don't want the full blacked-out titanium/blade.

Sweet collections everybody! Thanks for posting all the pics, love seeing those customized spydies! As Mr.Miller mentioned in his first post, it is a sickness, but I have no intentions on finding a cure!

1. I don't think I see any Sages in there. I thought I only wanted a Sage 1 until I got my hands on a Sage 2. I didn't think I'd like that smooth titanium or the frame lock. Boy was I wrong. The sound it makes when I flick it open with my middle finger is music to my ears. It's quickly become one of my favorites. Native 5 is high on the list for me too. Not too big but not too small either. I have the N5 LW and can't wait to add a G10. Last, I'll agree with what joeldworkin307 said, a Dragonfly is a must IMO. I really like my FRN version and I received a G10 today. Wow! For a small knife that little G10 DF is solid!

2. I'm much newer at this than you are so I really can't advise here. I researched heavily and was fortunate enough to have a friend send me some to try before I buy. So far I like all of them and try to give them all some pocket time. I have a couple more on my list and I'll have an even dozen. But, like you I don't want knives laying around that I don't use so I imagine I'll eventually send a few to new homes. But I'm sure the ones that leave will be replaced with new models that come out that I want to try, like the smaller PM2.

3. I think you have a great collection going!

I keep going back and forth on sages. I have a small sebenza, so the idea that the sage 2 is a sebenza killer is out, and they just seem too tall for me. too bulky in pocket and such. no question they'd be incredible, but it just seems that they don't have a place in my rotation. G10 dragonfly, and a nice native are both tempting. I haven't had many opportunities to handle other people's knives. I'm going to have to make some more friends!
You have a pic of your collection?

So... questions for the audience:
1. what is this collection missing?
Fixed blade

I owned two Lum Tanto folders. Original CE with coated blade and sprint, which I sold. Used money to buy Lum tanto fixed blade. this is the gorgeous knife and still avalable at some dealers at great price. I saw it few days ago at my favorite pharmacy, which mails bandages to their customers for free:).

Lum tanto fixed is without a doubt gorgeous. I have a couple fixed blades, but no spyders yet. Thought about a streetbeat, or salt serrated fixed blade

millie is large yet very light. It is a great slicer that I think easily outslice the two models you mentioned. Now here comes sth very subjective: I think it is among the most visually appealing spyderco folders. For example, I think it looks more beautiful than pm2 (I do have a pm2 and like it so pm2 fans please do not go after me).

Ok, ok! everyone says, "You must own a millie"
what is it about the millie?
what does a millie do that my manix, or Gayle Bradley can't handle?

Mike

I don't know that the Military does anything that those others can't handle. Except maybe being about the best food prep folder ever. With a longer blade at a lighter weight.
Despite being a happy owner of a Manix, a well used Manix XL and GB, I have 2 Millies, and am so glad I do.
Your mileage may vary, but I doubt it. :)
