I thought in order to help those who are looking for a 2x72" grinder I would post pictures and talk about the grinders I have.
The first grinder I bought was the square wheel grinder. It made a huge difference in my knifemaking, and really helped get me established. I have had it for 35 years and it has been a real workhorse, and I still use it a lot.
Several years later I bought a 1 1/2 hp variable speed motor for the square wheel drive grinder. The original drive wheel was too large so Rob Frink made me a smaller drive wheel that works great. I am really impressed by Rob Frink's ability as a machinest.
I made several attachments for the square wheel grinder. I milled out the web on the original side plate and all the attachments are quick change. I loosen two bolts, slide the attachment out, slide the new one in, tighten the bolts and everything is ready.
Good points on the square wheel are, it is rugged, well built and stands the test of time. I like the quick change attachments. The belt on the square wheel is enclosed so in those rare occasions that a belt breaks, you have some protections.
Not so good points. It is noisy, there is some vibration, the tracking is ok, but not great.
The square wheel grinder has served me well, but today I think there are better grinders on the market.
Next time I will talk about the Burr King grinder.
