I was so excited to get my BK9 in the mail today from Psyop. It is everything I hoped it would be. I was very surprised how lightweight it feels in the hand. I took it outside and promptly destroyed a 4x4 with it. Eye protection required! Chips were flying EVERYWHERE!
YEAH!

Now its time for some modifications.
Strip!

I always spray the stripper and then wrap up the knife in foil so it cant dry out too fast.

Alright I actually like the thumb ramp on the 9 but decided that Id like to be able to choke up on the blade past the thumb ramp for finer work so I decided to continue the indents down the forward side of the ramp using a chainsaw file.

Added a finger choil because I really like them for more control

Then sanded down the primary bevel for some POP.

Next is to make some new handles from scratch and make a new sheath.
Thanks for looking!

I like that choil. Very subtle and not too deep. I'm in the "rampless crew" though. Yes there's a crew and we are all haters ;)

Nice work, the jimping looks like it came from the factory! Looking forward to seeing it finished

Great job! I noticed the stripper didn't remove the logo etching. I stripped my BK-2 with a scotchbrite wheel which took off everything. Liked the the stamping on the older knives better.

That's an interesting treatment of the ramp. Never seen that before, would like to hear how you're liking it after some time. Love the choil.

Nice work. The new ramp jimping is a first, I do believe. Haven't seen that before. I need to get busy on my 9. I was gonna do a few simple mods, but I think I'm gonna do a bit more to it now.

Thanks a lot everyone, for the handles I'm going to be using composite wood material used in decks and fences. The forward jimping along with the choil make push cuts when carving feel more controllable.

Got the handles done tonight, also used stainless t-screws to clamp it all together. That composite wood is very tough to sand, it put my belt sander to work, thats for sure!
It really takes the BLO nicely though.
So far Im really happy with the 9 so far, and the new handles feel just as comfy as the grivory.
Enjoy!

Man that thing is looking ugly....I love it! I hate knives when they are knew and pretty.

Got some more work done on the scales, profiled to match the stock grip shape and put on an infinity loop lanyard(something new I thought Id try, no visible knot)

Along with my other favorite chopper:

Great mods brother. I have thought of making my own scales as well. If I wanted to use the same hardware what bit can I use to counter sink hex heads? I noticed you didnt do this method, but any suggestions? Also, how did you tighten those bolts up with out it spinning?

Those are looking good. I just ordered a 710 sheath for my month old 9 and am afraid to do anything to it until I get the sheath. You know, worried about fit and all.

If you want to sink hex heads youll want to countersink the next smallest hole(compared to the size of the nut) and then use a small chisel to open up the flats of the hex.
On mine the female T-nut has a screwdriver slot in it to hold it still while tightening the allen head on the other side.

Thanks Tdhurl1103!

I was able to use the 9 this weekend to fully process a fire out back and it did SO well. It really chopped up the large branches I used and batonning was SO easy it was laughable.
