The story of Ali -- Sunday AM and another Nepali essay. Pix & long read.

I sometimes ask myself why it is that I read this forum faithfully, nearly every day. Part of the answer is stories like the one that started off this thread. The rest of the answer is that I want, maybe even need, to be a member of a group that is so warm and caring and that, by and large, exemplifies the best of what it is to be human.

Sure, we’re all interested in and knowledgeable about knives or we wouldn’t have found this in the first place. And certainly we feel interest in and respect for HI and the khukuris made in Bir Gorka. But that’s kind of incidental after a while. I come back here not because I want to buy more khukuris, though that would be nice, but my current five is likely as far as I’ll go for a while. I come back to listen to Uncle Bill, and Yvsa, and many others.

I’m probably close in age to these gentlemen -- or getting there, in any case -- and I find their experiences, opinions, and philosophies to be helpful in daily life and enlightening for one who believes that spirituality is in the journey, not the destination. Even the mundane daily chatter that characterizes most of the posts here is refreshing and helps me connect with a wider world. I’ve never met or even spoken with Bill or Yvsa, yet I feel that I know them at least as well as any member of the family in which I grew up.

Finally, for anyone who’s reading this thread, I recommend that you check out the Heroic Stories website and subscribe to their free e-mail letter. It’s a very useful leaven to the terror and anger and rage that seems to dominate the news every day, and I almost always finish it feeling better about my place in the universe. :)

Great experience.

I have come to expect no less from Mr. Martino.

The "teach a man to fish ... " saying reminds me of a signature Ron Hood is using on his forum. He says "Build a man a fire and he will stay warm for a night. Set a man on fire and he will stay warm the rest of his life."

Ron does have a way with words.

;)

:DROTFLMAO:D I wish I'd thought of that one--that's hilarious!!

About that Ron Hood quote, try this variation:

"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll never do any useful work again."
