The book, "The Story of Buck..." by Tom Ables, 1991: I stumbled upon a new, still in shrink-wrap, hardbound 1st edition (I think that there was only one edition) so I bot it.

I had been thinking that it was very unlikely that new ones existed for sale. So I was surprised to find two today. Huh.

I'm looking forward to reading about the family/business/cutlery that I find so attractive and have to admit I know so little about.

It's a great book. I was just referring to it yesterday and again this morning. I also have one still sealed up but I have the other dog-eared one that I use for reference.

Of course. You couldn't be more right... I need a user. I can't be pawing through a brand new rare book with my filthy mits. Are they really rare? Back to the book peddler I go.

There were a few of these on the bay not too long ago, in original packaging sold with either a 110 or a 119. Really cool. I read mine and passed it on. Books, I have so many books, I have to get rid of some from time to time. Moving is a bitch...

I have one I got for about $20 and I've been watching prices over the past year.....at times the book was scarce and priced no lower than about $40 for very good condition.

I do think $21.95 for "new in the shrinkwrap" is a good price, so I'll buy one on Amazon at that price and see if it's for real.

Thanks for the tip.

:)

I was lucky and picked one up mint except a 1.5" tear in the dust cover for about $8 plus shipping-would love to have one still wrapped.

If you get a crayon drawing by a three-year-old in a peachy or if you received a new gem of a book let us know.

How much trouble is it to digitize a book and make it searchable I wonder....

It would be terrific to have a used copy with notes from an astute collector, added value, you know. Something all marked up with lines connecting desparate sentences/phrases, liner notes and hand drawings. The real skinny with the book version and all in one place. Already highlighted good parts so you read these and you're ready for the test.

Like BG, I wonder just what I'll actually receive. I'll post a pic when it arrives.

There is another book, if you can find one.

Blades Guide to Knives & Their Values, By Steve Shackleford

This one is a 2005 edition. Don't know if there is a more recent edition or not.

Lots of info on Buck knives as well as others. Is a huge book. It has values based on time it was written.

A few years ago the word was that the 2005 edition of the Blade Guide was the last one worth a damn.

Newer ones were flawed in many ways.

I don't know if recent editions have come out that are ok again.

I have three editions of Blade's Guide To Knives & Their Values. 2001 by Bernard Levine/Edited by Bud Lang, 2005 edited by Steve Shackleford and the 2009 ( 7th Edition) edited by Steve Shackleford. I have been through these books front to back many times. In my opinion the 7th Edition is by far the best for BUCK KNIVES. Joe Houser, John Foresman, Dick Matheny all contributed to the book. And I'm sure I'm leaving someone out.

Well, I guess I'll have to get to Amazon and get me a 2009 edition.

Hadn't heard anything about it.

Also, for those who are interested in digitizing and searching books, Amazon has a "Search Inside" feature that allows you to do limited searches on their site.

Sometimes you can find interesting stuff without even owning a book.......unfortunately, the Buck book is not set up that way, but I believe the Blade Guide is.

It is limited, but I have succeeded in finding some things I needed to know.

Just for info.

humm i tink it could be a copy right infringement to scan a book some owl
but then i dont know if a copy left would be ok either?
any way .. have read both have both also
and .. well there are some diffrences ... and in my mind a few errors in both
but over all verry verrry good sorce of information ...
some of the best i tried to refind on the net and
vola they seem to have disapeared for some odd reason
a mag interview with al buck .. cant even remember the mag name
another ones interview with chuck many years ago..
and a news paper interview with CJ while he was in the custom shop!!
all seem to have ... vanished ...

i wish (sniff shiff) i could sit with all them and do my own interview for my book some time...
be right nice to get their thoughts on things i think i know ... but dont kno hows i kno...

If I'm not mistaken, I just saw that book today.

On the coffee table by the fireplace in the Buck Knives factory lobby.

I'll take a picture next time I'm over there.

You are right. (It's right by the couch on the coffe table infront of the fireplace)

Matter of fact I was their yesterday! Small world..

I thought that my BuckMaster book should be out their also. ;) (Since its the first book written on any Buck knife series) ;)

I have a well broken in edition of that book. One of my favorites. Next time they do a signing at the Buck factory I'm going to have everybody there sign it. I also need to get rich to sign his book for me and take that one to the factory too.

I bought mine in 1998 at the Indy 1500 gun and knife show for $30, and the guy threw in a model 110.

I received the first edition and pristine hardbound and shrink-wrapped Buck book today in the mail.

Dimensions: Wide 9.25 inches x High 12.25 inches x Thick just over 1/2 inch.

Weight: 2 pounds.

All these cutting edges and I am unable to get thru the shrinkwrap...... I need a user book. Dave couldn't have been more right.
